Lelouch Lamperouge - Code Geass
Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass is a brilliant strategist and the mastermind behind a revolutionary movement to overthrow an oppressive empire. With his Geass power, which allows him to command others, Lelouch is able to manipulate situations and people to achieve his goals. However, beneath his cold, calculating exterior is a character who struggles with his own ideals, the consequences of his actions, and his deep love for his sister, Nunnally. Lelouch’s inner conflict, his moral ambiguity, and his charismatic leadership make him a character that’s both fascinating and morally complex.

What makes Lelouch stand out is his multifaceted nature. On one hand, he’s a ruthless and intelligent leader, but on the other, he’s a deeply emotional person torn by his desire for justice and his personal connections. Lelouch’s journey is about reconciling these parts of himself, as well as dealing with the consequences of the sacrifices he makes for his revolution. His ability to manipulate both his enemies and allies, coupled with his tragic motivations, make him one of the most iconic and morally gray characters in anime.

VS

Lena - 86
Lena from 86 is a complex and compelling character, a young lieutenant who serves in the 86 military division, tasked with commanding soldiers in a brutal, endless war. The soldiers of the 86 division are from the lower classes, treated as expendable, and often forced to fight in mechs against an overwhelming enemy. Lena’s journey is one of moral growth as she learns the truth about the people she commands and confronts her own biases and assumptions. She begins as an idealistic, somewhat naive individual, but as the story progresses, Lena is forced to come to terms with the horrors of war and the societal systems that perpetuate it.

What makes Lena stand out is her emotional journey from innocence to a deeper understanding of the world around her. Her genuine care for the 86 soldiers, especially her connection with Shin and the others, makes her a compassionate and human leader. Lena's internal conflict between duty and empathy, as well as her gradual evolution from a sheltered officer to someone who truly understands the sacrifices her soldiers make, adds layers of depth to her character. Her growth is a poignant commentary on the human cost of war.

VS

William James Moriarty - Moriarty the Patriot
William James Moriarty from Moriarty the Patriot is a reimagined version of the classic Sherlock Holmes antagonist, giving him a backstory that provides context for his actions and motivations. Moriarty is portrayed as a brilliant strategist who uses his intellect to challenge the corrupt aristocratic system in 19th-century England. While his actions are often villainous, Moriarty’s ultimate goal is to create a society of equality, which adds a layer of moral complexity to his character. His charm and charisma, combined with his cunning nature, make him a fascinating anti-hero.

What makes Moriarty stand out is the way he challenges traditional notions of good and evil. He is a morally ambiguous character, driven by a desire to correct societal injustices, even if his methods are extreme. His strategic brilliance and ability to outwit both his enemies and allies make him a compelling character, and his philosophical beliefs about justice and equality add depth to his motivations. Moriarty’s complex relationship with Sherlock Holmes, as both a rival and a mirror of sorts, makes him a standout figure in Moriarty the Patriot.

VS

Yuuichi Katagiri - Tomodachi Game
Yuuichi Katagiri from Tomodachi Game is a master manipulator, a complex character who is often unpredictable and calculating in the high-stakes games of trust and betrayal that form the crux of the series. Initially presented as a friendly and seemingly genuine person, Yuuichi's true character is gradually revealed as someone who is willing to use any means necessary to achieve his goals. His intelligence and ability to read others make him a formidable player in the games, but his true motivations and emotional struggles gradually come to light, adding layers of complexity to his character.

What makes Yuuichi stand out is his strategic mind and emotional depth. While his manipulative nature and ability to outthink his opponents make him a compelling character, it’s his hidden vulnerabilities and the reasons behind his cold actions that truly make him interesting. His journey in Tomodachi Game is about more than just winningβ€”it’s about uncovering the reasons behind his choices and how those choices reflect deeper emotional scars.

VS

Jet Black - Cowboy Bebop
Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop is the grizzled, no-nonsense ex-cop and the heart of the Bebop crew. He's the steady hand that keeps things grounded amidst the chaos of space bounty hunting. Jet's past as a former Inter-Solar System Police officer has left him with a strong sense of justice, but also a hardened exterior, making him the perfect foil to the reckless and chaotic Spike Spiegel. His relationship with the rest of the crew, particularly Faye and Ed, shows his softer side, and his struggles with loneliness and a past full of regrets make him a deeply human character despite his tough appearance.

What makes Jet stand out is his balance of wisdom, reliability, and vulnerability. While he may not be as flashy as Spike, Jet’s emotional depth and quiet leadership are essential to the Bebop’s dynamic. His personal history, particularly his broken relationships and his former partner’s betrayal, adds layers of complexity to his character. Jet's sense of honor, duty, and loyalty to his friends make him one of the most grounded and enduring characters in Cowboy Bebop.

VS

Natsuki Subaru - Re:Zero
Natsuki Subaru from Re:Zero starts his journey as an ordinary, seemingly unremarkable teenager, but his ability to "Return by Death"β€”the power to reset time whenever he diesβ€”propels him into a world of magic, monsters, and tragedy. Subaru’s initial cocky attitude masks his deep insecurities, but as he faces unimaginable hardships, including his own death over and over, he evolves into a character of incredible emotional depth. Subaru’s development is less about gaining power and more about growing emotionally, learning about the value of sacrifice, responsibility, and the consequences of his actions.

What makes Subaru stand out is his relentless will to protect those he loves, even when it feels like the world is stacked against him. His internal struggles with self-worth, combined with his willingness to endure pain for others, make him both frustrating and deeply admirable. Subaru's growth as a person and his determination to break the cycle of suffering make him one of the most complex and compelling protagonists in modern anime.

VS

Aqua - Konosuba
Aqua from KonoSuba stands out as a hilariously unconventional main character in the isekai genre. Unlike typical powerful and wise goddesses, Aqua is a chaotic blend of divine power and human pettiness. Her incompetence, selfishness, and emotional outbursts make her the polar opposite of a standard support character β€” yet that’s what makes her so entertaining and memorable. Despite her flaws, Aqua brings a unique kind of balance to the party. Her healing and purification skills are often the key to surviving otherwise impossible situations, even if she constantly complains about them. She's the classic β€œyou don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone” character: frustrating to deal with, but absolutely essential.

What really makes Aqua great is how she subverts expectations. In most fantasy stories, gods and priestesses are wise and dignified. Aqua, however, is prideful, lazy, and frequently the cause of the group’s misfortunes β€” and that contrast is played for maximum comedic effect. Her chemistry with Kazuma is the comedic heart of the series, built on mutual disdain, reluctant teamwork, and perfect comedic timing. Beneath all her flaws, there’s a layer of loyalty and genuine emotion that peeks through in key moments, reminding us that she’s more than just comic relief. Aqua is a character who embraces absurdity, but still finds moments to be surprisingly human β€” and that’s what makes her not just a great main character, but a defining part of KonoSuba's unique charm.

VS

Simon - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Simon from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a character who embodies the theme of growth and perseverance. He starts the series as a timid, unsure boy, living in an underground village, but through his experiences and the influence of his mentor, Kamina, he rises to become a leader in his own right. Over time, Simon learns to embrace his own strength, his leadership qualities, and his ability to inspire those around him. His journey is both an emotional and physical one, as he faces personal challenges and external threats, but ultimately, Simon’s growth into a confident, capable hero is one of the most inspiring arcs in anime.

What makes Simon stand out is his transformation from a timid follower to a powerful leader. His unwavering determination to never give up, even when things seem impossible, reflects the core message of Gurren Lagann: pushing through limits and fighting for what you believe in. Simon’s relationship with Kamina and his struggle to live up to his mentor’s legacy adds emotional depth to his character. His journey is a testament to personal growth, showing that anyone, no matter how small they start, can become a hero.

VS

Hiei - Yu Yu Hakusho
Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho is a powerful, stoic, and sometimes ruthless character who starts as one of the main antagonists but evolves into one of the series' most beloved characters. He is a skilled fighter with unparalleled speed and the ability to control the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, a technique that makes him a fearsome opponent. Despite his cold demeanor, Hiei’s development reveals a more complex character, one who values loyalty and grows emotionally as he forms relationships with the other members of the Spirit Detective team, particularly Kurama.

What makes Hiei stand out is his duality. He is both a warrior driven by pride and personal honor, but also someone who struggles with his past and the consequences of his actions. His relationships, particularly with his sister Yukina and his deep bond with his friends, reveal the softer side of this seemingly cold character. Hiei’s journey is about finding his place in a world where he has often felt like an outsider, making his eventual growth and redemption all the more satisfying.

VS

Senku - Dr. Stone
Senku Ishigami from Dr. Stone is a genius scientist who, after humanity is petrified into stone statues, works tirelessly to rebuild civilization from scratch using the power of science. His enthusiasm for scientific discovery, combined with his ability to think logically and outside the box, makes him an inspiring protagonist. Senku’s determination to use science to restore the world is balanced by his unyielding optimism, even in the face of overwhelming odds. His unwavering belief in human ingenuity and intellect allows him to rise to the occasion in ways that no one else could.

What makes Senku stand out is his unrelenting drive to rebuild society with science as his ultimate tool. His intellect and passion for discovery often put him at odds with those around him, but it’s his clear sense of purpose and his leadership that inspire others to follow him. Senku’s journey is not just about scientific innovation, but about rebuilding trust and cooperation in a broken world, making him one of the most iconic and clever protagonists in recent anime.

VS

Asa Mitaka - Chainsaw Man
Asa Mitaka in Chainsaw Man is a unique character who brings a different dynamic to the series with her emotional complexity and struggles with relationships. As a student at the Tokyo Public Safety Devil Hunter's School, Asa initially presents herself as a no-nonsense, level-headed individual with a keen sense of responsibility. However, beneath this calm exterior lies a woman who is deeply conflicted about her past, her personal demons, and her role in the chaotic world of Devil Hunters. Asa's feelings of inadequacy, fear of rejection, and the weight of her traumatic experiences define her character arc, making her journey one of personal discovery and growth.

What makes Asa stand out is her vulnerability in a world dominated by violence and uncertainty. Unlike many of the hardened and cynical characters around her, Asa's emotional struggles are front and center. Her desire for connection and belonging, as well as her deep-seated fears, allow the audience to empathize with her on a more human level. Asa’s development throughout Chainsaw Man is an exploration of strength not just through action, but also through her emotional resilience and determination to carve out a sense of self in an unforgiving world.

VS

Lupin - Lupin the Third
Lupin III from Lupin the Third is the charming and suave master thief, known for his exceptional skills in heists and his love for adventure. Lupin’s personality is a unique blend of wit, charisma, and cocky arrogance, but his loyalty to his friends and his sense of honor always shine through. Whether he’s evading the law, outsmarting rivals, or pursuing his next big heist, Lupin is always one step ahead, using his intelligence and daring to achieve his goals. Despite his criminal tendencies, Lupin often uses his skills to fight against greater injustices, making him a complicated but lovable anti-hero.

What makes Lupin stand out is his combination of brilliance, humor, and moral flexibility. He is a master thief who follows his own code of conduct and is often motivated by personal goals rather than wealth or power. His unshakable confidence, his deep loyalty to his friends, and his ability to always escape from impossible situations make him an iconic figure in the world of anime. Lupin’s adventures are as much about wit and humor as they are about heart, making him a standout character in the genre of action-comedy.

Just gonna drop a little piece on Liam I did in the past. He and Lulu are actually quite similar.

If there’s any story that’s been adapted and reinterpreted across generations and mediums, it’s Sherlock Holmes. From classic literature to blockbuster films and prestige TV, the legendary detective has been examined from almost every angle. But Moriarty the Patriot dares to do something different: it tells the story from the perspective of Holmes’s greatest adversary, Professor Moriarty. More than just a villain origin story, the series reframes Moriarty as an antihero - a man driven not by greed or power, but by the burning desire to bring justice to a deeply unjust society. And what’s remarkable is how quickly the story makes you sympathize with him - within a few chapters, you’re not just understanding Moriarty, you’re rooting for him.

Fans of detective fiction know Moriarty as the brilliant 'Napoleon of crime,' a shadowy foil to Holmes’s genius. In Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works, Moriarty appears only briefly but looms large as Holmes’s intellectual equal and nemesis. Moriarty the Patriot builds on that mystique, using the vagueness of his canon backstory as fertile ground for reinvention. In this version, William James Moriarty is not born into privilege - he’s a gifted orphan adopted into a noble family alongside his brother Louis. When the cruelty of the Moriarty household becomes unbearable, William, Louis, and their adoptive brother Albert conspire to destroy the family and take on William’s identity. From then on, the trio uses their social status and intellect to orchestrate the downfall of the British aristocracy from within.

Set in the late 19th century British Empire - a time of profound social inequality - the show establishes a world where the poor are disposable and the rich are untouchable. The Moriarty brothers, now nobles themselves, dedicate their lives to tearing down this rigged system. By day, William is a respected professor and mathematical genius. By night, he acts as a crime consultant, taking on cases from people whose lives have been destroyed by the privileged. These are not simple revenge stories - they are deeply structured moral plays. William listens to the grievances of the oppressed, confirms the guilt of the elites involved, and then offers a way out: a carefully constructed opportunity for the victims to take justice into their own hands. But only if they consent, William never acts without their approval.

This is where the series gets morally complex. William doesn’t commit the murders himself; instead, he empowers the wronged to carry out revenge in ways that ensure they escape punishment. His plans are clinical, meticulous, and disturbingly efficient. From poisoned wine to well-placed fires, each crime is symbolic as well as effective. And yet, William never feels like a bloodthirsty killer. He feels like someone burdened by the cruelty of the world and determined to reset the scales, no matter the cost. His charisma and cool-headed brilliance mask a deep well of fury at the injustice embedded in British society, and his transformation into the infamous 'Professor Moriarty' is portrayed not as a descent, but a conscious choice.

What keeps Moriarty the Patriot from romanticizing this violence too much is that it never lets you forget what William is doing. He is not a hero in the traditional sense. He manipulates people, coerces them, and uses fear and deception as tools. His end goal, a more equal world, is noble, but his means are undeniably dark. The show asks a pointed question: when the system is corrupt beyond repair, is it moral to destroy it using immoral methods? William answers yes - and while the audience might agree in the moment, the unsettling implications linger. This moral tension is what makes him such a compelling lead.

A major part of the show’s appeal also lies in its presentation. Hikaru Miyoshi’s art renders William and his conspirators as refined, elegant figures, almost too perfect for the grim deeds they commit. There’s a bishonen air to the characters that enhances the story’s emotional resonance while drawing in readers familiar with anime and manga’s dramatic style. The Victorian backdrop is richly detailed, both in its aesthetic and in how it supports the plot. The foggy alleys of London, the lavish but cold aristocratic homes, and the contrast between upper- and lower-class life all ground the narrative in a time of upheaval and hypocrisy.

Eventually, William’s activities attract the attention of Sherlock Holmes himself, and the series pivots into a thrilling game of cat and mouse between two brilliant minds on opposing sides of justice. But the twist is clear: unlike most adaptations where Holmes is the moral center, Moriarty the Patriot makes the case for Moriarty as the one with a clearer vision of societal change, even if his hands are far bloodier.

Moriarty has made himself into the ultimate evil, thus forcing people to ally against him, and stay united, and thus fulfilling his coveted dream. And the funny thing, he has already designated a man who shall stop him and be the shinning light of the world. That man is none other than Sherlock Holmes

Katagiri Yuuichi tho.

That's one crazy motherfucker.

Has the makings of a top tier villain but is the MC

He isn't just smart, he's terrifyingly calculated. He reads people like open books, predicting their actions, manipulating their fears, and turning even their trust against them. He’s always ten steps ahead, pulling strings from the shadows while pretending to be just another player. But his intelligence isn't just used for survival,Yuuichi takes a certain thrill in the chaos. He doesn't just endure the Tomodachi Game; he plays it like a predator circling prey, unafraid to lie, threaten, or mentally break his opponents to achieve his goals. His moral compass is murky at best, and while he claims to value his friends, it's clear he ultimately only trusts himself.

He's someone who walks into psychological warfare with a smile, because deep down, he knows this is where he thrives. He doesn’t flinch at violence, doesn’t hesitate to outwit his closest allies if it’s necessary, and doesn’t care if people label him a villain. And that’s what makes him so compelling: he’s not a traditional protagonist fighting for truth or justice, he’s a manipulator, a tactician, and maybe even a bit of a sociopath.

Yuuichi stands apart as something else entirely, a lone wolf who thrives in the darkest parts of the game. His mind is his greatest weapon, and his willingness to cross lines others won’t even approach makes him a terrifying force to watch. He doesn’t just survive the Tomodachi Game, he bends it to his will. Watching Yuuichi work is like watching a fire start slowly in a quiet room: calm at first, until it’s burning everything down.
