Yeah, I've binged CSM part 1 in less than a week, it's a quick read. Unlike Death Note, which is very wordy and sometimes requires re-reading a thing or two :)
Absolutely.
How do you like CSM part 2 now that you've read it in a bulk, and not on a weekly basis?
I still think part 1 was better, but that Fami twist is delicious. It just feels that sometimes there are "fillers" compared to the previous part, i.e. plot lines which are not necessarily interesting and not really contributing to the plot (although I'm giving Fujimoto the benefit of the doubt, the guy can cook).
I'd absolutely agree. Felt part 1 was better overall for now, but part 2 has highs as high as part 1. Death Chan's reveal is amazing.
yeah, basically Mirai Nikki plot with angels instead of diaries.
Seems so ngl.
hmmm, that's a good question, I haven't thought of my faves lately.
I'll probably list them out of order, and there might be some recency bias, but let's see how it goes:
Hiruma & Sena from Eyeshield 21
L from DN
Senku from Dr Stone
Yami & Mereoleona from Black Clover
Grimmjow & Urahara & Yoruichi from Bleach
Sanji from OP
Okay, that's the first 10 I came up with, so let me stop here. Ofc I've got more faves, but I really need to remember mangas I've read first, lol. And it's often that I remember a manga, and there's a whole ton of characters I like! Like FMA has an amazing cast, really difficult to pick one character, I love them all - Alphonse, Edward, Winry, Roy, General Armstrong, Scar, it's very difficult to find a character I dislike there (even if I hate some villains for what they did, I still like their characters a lot).
Very good choices all around.
Honestly top 10 is really difficult for me.
I know the top 3
Light
Lelouch
Johan Lieber
And after that it gets messy ngl.
Have a very hard time putting the rest in a rank.
Could very well be any of these
Gojo
Makima
Zoro
Death Devil
Mihawk
Sherlock and Liam
Allen Walker
Nea
Yami Yugi
Sebastian Michaelis
Undertaker
Lucius Zogratis
Vanitas
The Shapeless One
Buddha
Qin Shi
Sukuna
Izana
Aizen
Aomine Daiki
Dazai Osamu
Fyodor Dostoevsky
Itachi
Escanor
Walter from Hellsing
Alucard
Yami
Garou
Amai Mask
Kurapika
Chrollo
Hisoka
Eren
Edward Elric
Nagumo
Thorfinn
Canute
Listed pretty much most of them but I still feel like I forgot someone lmao.
I noticed that I have a character type I like the most. Usually, it's someone smart, strong in their way, quirky, with a certain honour code (like doing what's right even if it's against the rules or doesn't give you any benefits). Kind of a jerk with a heart of gold who can be sarcastic and tease their friends, but at the same time actually cares for them. When it comes to their emotional side, I'm a little torn. On one hand, I like impulsive and no-nonsense characters like Sanji, Grimmjow, Yami, and Mereoleona, on another hand I like it when the character can be more level-headed like L, Senku, Sena, and Urahara. Guess that's why I put Hiruma on the top, he can be both :)
As you could have noticed, I tend to like non-MC characters, as in shonen you often get a very specific type of MC which is always more or less the same. There are exceptions, but usually I find shonen MC less interesting then their friends and rivals. I also dislike this "chosen one" trope, which a lot of fantasy MCs embody, so while being gifted is a plus, hard work always makes the character more interesting to me.
What is your fav character type?
Interesting.
I’ve noticed a pattern in the characters I gravitate toward, they’re almost always the powerful, enigmatic types who blur the line between hero and villain. Think Light, Lelouch, Johan, Gojo, Makima, Sukuna, Aizen… you get the idea. There's something about that mix of high intellect, charisma, and darkness that just hits.
If I had to group most of them it would be something like this
Calculating geniuses (Light, Lelouch, Aizen, Fyodor, Dazai, Sherlock)
Darkly alluring and dangerous (Makima, Johan, Sukuna, The Shapeless One)
Powerful, cool, and emotionally complex (Gojo, Yami, Zoro, Mihawk, Buddha, Escanor)
Villains with vision or anti-heroes with conviction (Lucius Zogratis, Chrollo, Hisoka, Alucard, Garou, Eren)
Stylish manipulators or mysterious puppeteers (Undertaker, Sebastian, Walter, Vanitas)
Characters with tragic backstories or inner conflict (Itachi, Edward Elric, Kurapika, Thorfinn, Canute, Izana)
They’re never one-dimensional, they’re constantly shifting between roles: savior, monster, leader, loner. I love that duality. I don’t care for overly righteous protagonists or one-note villains. Give me the one who’s got a god-tier brain, a broken heart, and a touch of madness any day.
It’s not just about power either, it’s about
intention. A lot of these characters are trying to reshape the world or challenge it in some way, whether through manipulation, rebellion, or brute force. Even if I don’t agree with them, I get the
why - and that makes them compelling.
In the end, I guess I’m into the characters who are both feared and admired, who carry their pain like armor, and who are always playing a game that others haven’t even realized started.
Yeah, Light won, but he still was on the edge when battling with L - which made the manga so interesting imo.
Absolutely. L is after all almost as smart as Light. Just not quite as smart as him, that's my point.
L was pretty sure Light is Kira btw, the authors said so in their "how to read" edition.
That's true, I forgot about that. Still hold the view that Light was smarter to an extent though.
Did Sherlock even investigate Moriarty with Moriarty? Nope :)
You should read Moriarty the Patriot, for sure.
