Best Seasonal Anime Thread

Welcome everyone to the Best Seasonal Anime Thread.

As the name implies we'll be voting here for the best anime of each season.

The structure of the contest will be the following:

Each one of us may submit up to three anime series from the anime season, then contrary to the Best Female character contest, we'll do it like this:

- Each user gets 10 points to distribute between the anime pool.

- You can only give a maximum of 4 points to an anime series.

- You may vote/give points to as many series as you like (not surpassing the 10 points limit).

- I'll gather the points and announce the winners.

- I'll also post the MAL Score as well as the top rated positive review on MAL for each entry.

Pratical Example:

The submissions are:

Frieren

Apothecary Diaries

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten

In Another World with My Smartphone

My Hero Academia

Gachiakuta

So I've seen the first 4 anime and not the last two so I'll distribute the points like this:

Frieren - 4

Apothecary Diaries - 4

Angel Next Door Spoils me Rotten - 2

This is fine.

Or I can distribute it like:

Frieren - 3

Apothecary Diaries - 3

Angel Next Door - 2

In another World - 2

This is also fine.

But I (the host) am going to show the MAL score and top review for each anime at the start of the contest, so even if I (the user) didn't see that anime maybe I can give it some points (knowledge to make a more informed choice)

Frieren - 3

Apothecary - 3

Angel Next Door - 2

In another World - 1

Gachiakuta - 1

Always with a limit of 10. Note that this is not mandatory to give points to anime you haven't seen. You give points however you like.

Advantages:

Somewhat helps against popular anime trend.

You won't need to vote for anime you haven't seen which I saw was something not very favourable in the Female character contest.

No poll needed.

Disadavantages:

You have to post twice instead of once lol

Should work and it's fairly easy to do I think.

Review from MAL:
Relative slow but steady world building. The characters is well written and the dance choreography is very good and creators cared for the details. I read the manga and this anime will one of the top 5 in this season at least for me. Only "bad thing in the anime is the dance animation" but i think they do this way becouse if animated in minimalist way the people will watch more the dance itself. I think the animation in dance is purposive to highlight the dance itself. + My opinion is the animation is a plus but good animation is nothing without a well written story.

- Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill - 2 pts, MAL score: 7.64

Review from MAL:
This show in a nutshell, sums up this perfect quote: "We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." - T. S. Eliot, spaking about Life, Hilarity and Inspiration, Four Quartets "Little Gidding" Pt. 5

To say that novelist Ren Eguchi's Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi a.k.a Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill is the now-famed studio MAPPA's first-ever undertaking of the Isekai genre, to have people say that this show is MAPPA's Peak-sekai, it's not entirely baseless at all. No doubt it is great in an overall package, and for the very first time, MAPPA DID knock it out of the park for showcasing a decent Isekai.

I'm not going to paraphrase the same copy-paste tactics here, everyone, new or old, must have or has had the idea of the typical "summoned to another world" trait. And this is the same here for the MC: the 27-year-old Tsuyoshi Mukouda a.k.a "Mukohda", the mild-mannered but cowardly white-collar salaryman, and at the same time, a very proficient cook. Usually when Earth's people get Isekai-ed into another world, the "Hero's Party" group will consist of young high school students to help the kingdom in need to purge the demonfolk, typical Isekai stuff. But in this show, it's the typical round-up student crew and Mukohda himself who is arranged in line for this "Heroes vs. Demon Lord" story plot, and other than the 3 students, Mukohda himself has the power of "Online Supermarket", which in a battle, would be entirely useless, not being beneficial and a deadweight to the group. And it's with this intent that Mukohda simply ousts himself out of the Isekai race, convincing the nobles and letting him go scot free around the fantasy world.

But, as it turns out, Mukohda's "Online Supermarket" ability is actually very versatile, and that it allows him to order food and food-related products, straight from Earth. Think of it as like the Hello Fresh, Blue Apron or Home Chef meal delivery service in the U.S., but Aeon for Japan. This enables Mukohda to use his skill and purchase ingredients and prep items, all of which serves also as buffing items to temporarily boost stats. And it's a fierce combination of utility and power (that thankfully isn't OP at all), so much so that from a very long distance, it got the attention of the legendary wolf-like beast known as Fenrir...who demands that the salaryman himself feed him a meal. And the meals are so good that Fenrir immediately asks for seconds, that Mukohda spends the rest of his manhours making heaps of food for its satisfaction, enough to earn (or rather, force) him into a familiar contract. Together, Mukohda and Fenrir (evenutally named Fel), they journey through the lands, encountering more monsters and gods from the Spirit Realm, granting him familiar contracts and blessings in exchange for his food and otherworldly goods.

Cooking Isekai is a realistic adventure fantasy that's a gourmet comedy feast for the eyes, owing to its chill-pill, take-your-own-time slow beat that I honestly don't mind if the author knows what he's doing. And Ren Eguchi is intentionally making the series feel slow in regards to the overall world-building, so that the message will eventually wind up on what shows up on the plate itself, it's a mark of great balance between characterization and the atmopshere of the fantasy world around them.

The characters are what shines in Cooking Isekai, because they are tons of fun. Starting off with Mukohda's first familiar, the legendary Fel has lived for over a thousand years, and his personality is owed to his extraordinary strength, agility, and magic that enables him to wipe out most monsters with little effort...VERY little effort, I must say, for more varieties of meat. To the point that he is very boasting of his pride, selfishness, and gluttonous, choosing to follow Mukohda just simply to eat his food. Being a meat-lover, he obviously loves meat and hates vegetables, much to the scorn that when Mukohda has to fix a meal that involves vegetables, he must be thoughtful to hide it by blending ingredients that mask the flavours of the greens, much akin to a parent feeding his/her child with bite-sized offerings that look the same, but taste the same and not too different as to showcase the yuckiness of the hated greens. Mukohda's second familiar is Sui, the slime that's of child-like adorableness. Initially met as a baby, with the typical conception that slimes are weak, it evolves by gaining experience through battle and eating trash from Mukohda's Online Supermarket purchases, and this is what Sui's uniqueness is noted for being a special exception. It is able to melt enemies with acid bullets, as well as create potions and weapons, while enjoying desserts and disliking spicy foods. Mukohda himself is a level-headed character, though he's seemingly the innocent one who has to tolerate both familiars that he's the closest to (or rather, it's Fel who's always giving him the never-ending troubles), making sure that they're well fed and tagged along like a parent does holding his own children along the fantasy ride.

Remember that there aren't just monsters, but gods in the world too? One such Spirit Realm deity is Ninrir, the Goddess of Wind and the progenitor of Fel's Fenrir kind. Being notable by her long silver-colored hair and a huge sweet tooth, she is the first deity to grant Mukohda her blessing, giving him immunity to poisons, illnesses, and other negative status effects. But this is also due in exchange of an offering for sweets from his own world back in Japan. Due to her constant demands and frequent emotional outbursts, Mukohda refers to her as the "divine disappointment", which I thought was really funny, because her interest spiked the other deities to do the same towards Mukohda, draining more of his resources in exchange for their own tastes in desired offerings, amplifying the disappointment he had for the divine deities as a whole. It's a "dog-eat-dog" world for Mukohda, the disappointment that his familiars and gods must go first before him, but still coming out on his own inventions replicated like a MasterChef in another world and having the delight of his life, this second chance of a life is something that if you ask him of his thoughts, it's a life that he would not trade for anything else.

The most surprising aspect is of the animation studio chosen, because generally studios are only contracted for the production jobs they are offered for all kinds of shows, and in Cooking Isekai's case, it's MAPPA driving the wheel for this show, under one of its low-key directors of Kiyoshi Matsuda. The director for MAPPA's rather subpar shows like Kakeguruiร—ร— (Season 2), Uchi Tama?! Uchi no Tama Shirimasen ka?, and most recently with Summer 2021's Re-Main (co-director with chief Masafumi Nishida), it doesn't feel like this man should be given the more recent high/top-priority shows like Chainsaw Man or Jigokuraku a.k.a Hell's Paradise, simply because his work ethic would not suit this show that he's working on. Nevertheless, the MAPPA magic shines here just the same like in the famed studio's recent shows, with gorgeous visuals and beautiful animation, especially in the cooking segments that will make one salivate at the mouth. Since when did food become so good to look at, since Isekai Shokudou and Shokugeki no Soma, that this show feels like a wild ride in fusing modern inventions for a medieval world. It's that engrossing in style and substance.

The OST is just typical fine for an Isekai series like this. Van de Shop's debut Anisong sounds decent, and is a relative good time that mixes well with the alluring visuals. In the same vein, Yuuma Uchida's ED "Happy-go-Journey" sounds pedestrian as well, so no complaints there. Just a tad mediocre to the best that is just alright to my ears.

Cooking Isekai is a breath of fresh air in the slew of copy-paste Isekai shows this season. Though this show is one of the best we've seen all season, thanks to it not being an OP power fantasy, but it's just simply, a campy, laid-back life of a good time.

A good job there MAPPA, looking forward to your next Isekai rondo.

Review from MAL:
I like sexy anime girls. Iโ€™m a man. Donโ€™t judge me.
What can you do about it?
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

And this anime really solidified that I, in fact, canโ€™t do a damn thing about it. Itโ€™s filled with anime girls getting stripped naked and moaning while the MC casually runs his hands all over their bodies. A complete recipe for "donโ€™t open in public."

Now the recurring theme here is chiropractic therapy performed on sexy girls in the horniest way possible. And just like those YouTube chiropractic vids with female patients, we all know damn well you ainโ€™t watching it for the massage. So I wonโ€™t even bother digging deep into that whole massage thing.

When it comes to the fanservice, which makes up about 98% of this show, I wouldnโ€™t say itโ€™s the most degenerate thing ever to come out of Japan, but I would say it does its job just fine. It makes your junior twitch, because naked anime girls are hot, especially when theyโ€™re moaning non-stop. And you get a lot of that here.

What about the MC? Well, Iโ€™ve always said an MC can either elevate or ruin the enjoyment. This oneโ€™s a weird mix. Heโ€™s a bad MC because heโ€™s not a horny sex beast, but at the same time, heโ€™s a good MC because he actually participates and pushes all the good scenes forward. So heโ€™s both and neither. Itโ€™s confusing, but it works somehow.

What about the heroines? We got the tsundere, the NEET, the teasing girl, the kuudere, and the mommy type. You know, the classic lineup, nothing new. But one thingโ€™s for sure, theyโ€™re all voluptuous to some extent. Not much variety in body type here. Theyโ€™re all meaty. Even the flattest oneโ€™s got enough meat to fill your hand. So donโ€™t come expecting a gal with cutting board as a breast.

The animation can get a little off-putting at times. Sometimes their eyes are in the wrong place, sometimes their mouths look uncanny, but once the clothes come off, youโ€™re not gonna be focusing on their faces anyway.

So overall, itโ€™s a very enjoyable guilty pleasure. Watch this with your girlfriend to get the mood going.

Review from MAL:
Now with the release of The Summer Hikaru Died as the definitive yaoi of the year it was only natural that the Yuri gods would bestow it's counterpart with This Monster wants to eat me. The only surprise is that it came this early.
So far the anime is exceptionally well produced and directed being able to match the manga in tone and seamlessly adapt the panels into motion. The music in particular is a standout with it being to elevate moments of suspense and Hinako's monologues, with the latter being my favourite sequences so far. As a manga reader I can attest that the story will keep on getting better and better with each episode if they maintain the same quality.

And don't worry if this is not Yuri enough yet. You need to be patient but the Yuri will Yuri.
Oh my will the Yuri Yuri.

- My Friend's Little Sister Has It In For Me! - 1 pt, MAL score: 6.52

Review from MAL:
Many decided to gloss over this anime as it reminded them too much of "can a boy/girl friendship survive", but those who checked it out knew that this anime is anything but that infuriating story. While some elements are similar this is very mild love story that can be indeed enjoyable.

Animation and sound: they are alright. Animation is pretty average, not bad and not good but well enough that it's passable. Music is average with the exception of OP which not only has catchy song but also has tons of cultural references.

Overall: animation and music are fine and the OP is great.

Characters: Akiteru is serious high school boy that decided to invest all time he has into improving himself and securing good future. Contrary to him Iroha is his best friend little sister whose favorite pastime is teasing her senpai. The dynamic between the two is great, Iroha may act like Himari at the start but she never crosses the line that makes her downright annoying. And Akiteru is a kind soul that will help others by applying his own method to their problem. When dealing with Iroha he shows restraint and patience, never loosing his cool and ever doing a twist on her teasing attempts. Joining them is Ozuma who is Iroha's brother and nice, calm PC genius and Mashiro who is Akiteru's cousin and has difficulty of communicating her thought to not just him but everyone else - like a typical tsundere.

Overall: Akiteru and Iroha are great duo and the rest of the cast are enjoyable to watch, with the exception of Mashiro who is downright annoying at the start of the show.

Story: The story follows Akiteru and his wish to break big in the gaming industry with the help of his uncle. But his uncle puts a condition on him - to pretend to be Mashiro's boyfriend for the entirety of high school. He reluctantly agrees and has to deal with that along every other problems that can hamper his big gaming industry plans. There is actually more to this story than just that as it explores background of most of the characters in this 12 episodes, which is a nice change of pace than focusing just on main story alone. But I get it that some may find it annoying as Mashiro is very annoying until her arc is up and done and Iroha's backstory may not be interesting to some people.

Overall: story has an simple premise and focuses more on character development than on the main story plot for the duration of anime. Which is both good or bad thing depending on your own taste.

Overall grade: between 7 and 8. I personally gave it 10 as I enjoyed it quite much but realistically it lies somewhere between 7 and 8. What hampers it is the nature of the story as it spends a lot of time developing main characters to really push the main story forward. And Mashiro can be even more annoying than Himari is if you can believe it. The best scenes in this anime were when Iroha was on the spotlight, regardless of teasing her senpai or not.

I would recommend this anime if you want to watch some light romantic teasing story, but if you dislike really annoying characters and story that does not focus that much on the main plot then you can go ahead and skip it. If season 2 is ever done I will watch it.

Final rating: 10.

- Ninja vs Gokudo - 1 pt, MAL score: 6.38

Review from MAL:
Ninja vs Yakuza is a crazy concept, and you should watch it knowing that this anime follows the Baki school of logic. That is, everything goes as long as it's cool.

Similar to Baki, it has interesting characters who have ridiculous powers and 2 sides face off against each other.

It has some hilarious dialogue as well. One particular instance has a Yakuza guy lamenting the loss of his comrade saying that "he only tortured like 10 people, he didn't deserve to die!"

Yakuza here are not at all glamorized and they are obviously shown to be scum of the earth, but the characterizations are so good, and the Ninja are so ridiculously OP that you end up sort of rooting for the Yakuza despite yourself.

Not saying this anime is a masterpiece or that I am re-watching this, but as a seasonal anime? Absolutely recommend you hop on and enjoy the ride!

As of writing this, this anime has only come out with 3 eps and all it took to hook me up was 3 ep.
So I'll say this short and simple but
Holy shiiiii!!! Broooo, Light has so much freaking arua throughout this whole ep and more some in the throne. How satisfying this ep felt seeing that wolf-pup change and age in matters of seconds out of pure fear of Light might!!! I have not felt such power, not even Jin Woo IMO felt this way as of now. Can't wait to see what this anime has in store for us but as of now this anime won my heart 10/10 would recommend this anime to anyone who like characters max-aura farming

- This Monster Wants to Eat Me - 1 pt, MAL score: 7.45

So is there a limit to how many animes I can submit as long as I don't reach over 10 pts?
You submit 3 anime max.

Then I compile everyone's submission like in the best female character thread but instead of making a poll I make a post with all anime submitted (as well as the MAL score and review) and after that you can give points to whichever anime you want.
