I am documenting the similarities each Straw Hat has to their assumed Blackbeard Pirate counterparts and will update with new information or input from other users. Luffy aims for ten members (himself excluded), and Blackbeard has ten Titanic Captains; clearly the Blackbeard Pirates are the Straw Hats' (as TV Tropes calls it) "Psycho Rangers." Determining the Blackbeard Pirates match-ups is tricky because their similarities aren't limited to just one Straw Hat. Lafitte is a navigator like Nami but also brandishes a cane like Brook, so who does he mirror exactly? I'm going with the "jobs versus jobs" theory. One, they tell you more about each member on a deeper level, and two, they make this neat pattern (as you'll see below).

Titan 1 VS First New World Recruit
Jesus Burgess (1) + Jimbei (9)
  • Roles: Helmsman.
  • Specialize in a specific martial arts.
  • Renowned for their strength.
Also comparable to: Sanji, Franky

Titans 2–5 VS East Blue Recruits
Shiryu (2) + Roronoa Zoro (1)
  • Shiryu has no confirmed role (combatant? swordsman?).
  • "Number two" of their crew (according to the 1031 colorspread).
  • Devoted to the blade.
  • Met their captain while incarcerated.
  • Infamous at their former occupation, which involved rough-housing convicts.
  • Shiryu is the tsujigiri Zoro's been purported to be.
Van Auger (3) + Usopp (3)
  • Roles: Sniper
  • Auger debuted dazzling Usopp from afar with his sniping feats.
  • Will find their opponent's capabilities and weaknesses with little to no strife.
  • Heralded from the East Blue.
  • Auger is straightlaced and possesses a firearm, but Usopp is eccentric and brandishes goofy (but lethal) slingshots.
  • Auger is the calmest Blackbeard Pirate, but Usopp's the most cowardly Straw Hat.
Avalo Pizzaro (4) + Sanji (4)
  • Pizzaro has no confirmed role (chef?).
  • Rejected North Blue royalty.
  • Pizarro might throw down with his metal arms as a contrast to Sanji's leg style.
Notes
  • Ivankov neglected to name Pizarro with Catarina Devon, Sanjuan Wolf, and Vasco Shot in ch. 538. (Not the first time an okama missed someone, looks at Mr. 2.)
  • Pizarro and Shiryu were the only Impel Down recruits not dawning the prisoner getup.
  • Pizarro had his first postskip title box in the chapter that revealed Shiryu and Devon having Devil Fruits that are the same or similar to past Sanji opponents (just saying).
Lafitte (5) + Nami (2)
  • Roles: Navigator
  • Lafitte's navigational skills must be off the charts (no pun intended) if he gets by without a Log Pose.
  • Exceptional infiltration skills (Lafitte's probably more exceptional because he sneaked into Sengoku's conference at Mariejois).
  • Lafitte may be a sadistic constable tossed out of his own jurisdiction by its people but Nami's a well-known thief beloved in her home village.
Notes
  • A male opponent would be abnormal for Nami but consider Lafitte's feminine attributes.
  • Lafitte and Shiryu were reintroduced in the timeskip side-by-side with title boxes, maybe as some parallel to the Romance Trio (or Monster Trio?).
  • Lafitte has hints of being a siren Zoan, seductress beings. Who else do we know is a seductress?
Also comparable to: Sanji, Brook

Titans 6–9 VS Paradise Recruits
Catarina Devon (6) + Nico Robin (6)
  • Devon has no confirmed role (historian?).
  • The rumors of Robin being this vile woman are untrue, but they certainly are true for Devon.
  • Dark sense of humor, but Devon takes it to another level (Robin's at least friendly).
Also comparable to: Nami

Sanjuan Wolf (7) + Franky (7)
  • Wolf has no confirmed role (shipwright?).
  • Relate to battleships somehow even if Sanjuan Wolf's was due to an epithet pertaining to his size.
  • Round eyes with visible downward eyelash marks.
Notes
  • Played vital roles when their crew lost their original ship.
  • Sanjuan Wolf might be named after the Spanish warship called the San Juan Nepomuceno.

Vasco Shot (8) + Brook (8)
  • Shot has no confirmed role (musician? entertainer?).
Notes
  • The jester hat probably means Shot is a performer.
Doc Q (9) + Tony Tony Chopper (5)
  • Roles: Doctor
  • Associated with animals.

Titan 10 VS Final New World
Tenth Titan (10) + Tenth Straw Hat (10)
  • No confirmed roles for either.
  • Mystery person.

Other Notes
  • Blackbeard's initial members are essentially Luffy's first five with Zoro and Sanji's counterparts swapped out for Jimbei's.
  • Blackbeard had Burgess (Jimbei's counterpart) from the get-go and met Zoro's counterpart at Impel Down; Luffy had Zoro from the get-go and met Jimbei at Impel Down.

I like your thinking – as I also do not only look at their posts or strengths, but also analyse each of their characters. Seeing as you have found also many similarities we could compare them. However, I not only looked for the similarities, but also for their oppositeness as well. If we do that, the line-up can become clearer.

I can distinguish at least 7 BBP, who are – character-wise – the general opposite or have similar traits of their Straw hat counterpart. (Sure, there are character traits which are not reflected in the counterpart of the BBP, but the most prominent of them usually are.) (note: The traits in red do not reflect in the counterpart.)
Now I have the following:



Franky:

  • Is “hard boiled” (Dressrosa) – unfazed by anything, though cries if there is a touching story
  • Likes to build/invent futuristic tech / is a cyborg
  • Extroverted
  • Energetic (The Franky arms in the air forming a star)
  • Likes to build ships
Juan Wolf:

  • Oftentimes tells everyone how much he is uncomfortable and whines about almost everything
  • Comes off as someone who seems more than a cave man, with his features (simple)
  • Rather shy and introverted (sometimes puts his hand in front of his mouth)
  • Comes off as slow
  • Is referred to as a ship (battleship)


Zoro

  • Fights with swords
  • First mate
  • Always acts upon honour
    • respects other’s honour in general human interaction
  • Introverted
    • Sleeps a lot
    • Doesn’t really say much
  • Doesn’t jump headless into fights before he has not evaluated the situation beforehand
  • Almost always has a grave expression on his face
  • Is distrustful
  • If he sees that the general opinion of the crew does sway towards a rather subjective outcome, he puts his foot down and reminds everyone in an objective reasoning of their goals, rules and general unspoken rules (e.g. Beginning at Thriller bark and the incident when Luffy wanted to head after Vivi)
Burgess:

  • Fights with bare hands
  • Doesn’t care about honour in general
    • Likes to use underhanded methods to win
    • Sometimes forgets to respect others (calls his commodore “captain”)
    • Wears a shopping bag on his head while fighting – doesn’t care how he looks/ disregards the fight
    • Calls Luffy a shrimp
  • Extroverted
    • Likes to yell and mock
    • Shows off in the coliseum
    • Enjoys the spotlight
  • Acts before he has permit by his captain, even if the opponent is stronger than him (as we can see as he is attacking Ace PTS)
  • Smiles and grins a lot
  • Is distrustful of Aokiji




Jinbe:

  • Is a fatherly figure (to Luffy after Marineford)
    • Can distinguish what is really mattering in a dispute and calms the situation down
    • Is wise and reasons about things
  • Fights with his bare hands
  • Rather introverted and calm
  • Does not like racism
  • Was in the military and joined the pirates after
  • He honours Fisher Tiger’s will, to never kill
Shiriyu

  • Comes off as interpersonally cold
  • Fights with a sword
  • Rather introverted and calm
  • Is depicted as a fascist because of his uniform
  • Was in the marine, but joined the BBP after (Impel Down)
  • Likes to kill/doesn’t care if someone gets killed




Nami:

  • As an orphan living with Bell-mere, she experienced how poverty felt as even the food was something they could barely afford
  • Is cat-themed with Oda referring to her as the cat-burglar and depicting her multiple times as cat
  • Controlls the weather and the air above us
  • Gets angry when she is confronted with stupidity (Especially from Luffy, if he does stupid things)
  • Loves quiet activities and is rather introverted
  • Is reasonable and intelligent
  • Tricks or steals from people when she sees an opportunity
  • Gets scared easily
  • Prefers to be on the safe side
Avalo Pizarro

  • As a king, he was once rich and had money in abundance
  • Is cat-themed with his laughter (Nyaa-ha-ha-ha), his mane, whisker-like beard and slit-like cat-eyes
  • Controls the earth below our feet (Island-island-fruit)
  • Doesn’t want to make BB angry
  • Extroverted
  • Once said that he wants to be the leader (blurts it out without thought), which makes me think that he really isn’t that bright




Ussop:

  • Sniper
  • Is cowardly and oftentimes runs from danger
  • Immediately voices his distress to others, when a situation occurs and hesitates when there is danger; everything fazes him, as he often becomes afraid
  • Extroverted
  • Is depicted as a boyish, brash youngling
  • Likes to tinker
Van Ogre:

  • Sniper
  • He doesn’t hesitate to join a battle, even if the opponent is stronger than he is; sometimes even acts before he has permit by his captain (is proactive)
  • Isn’t fazed by anything, but keeps cool
  • Rather introverted
  • Is depicted as a sophisticated, grown man




Chopper

  • Doctor
  • Wants to heal every illness in the world
  • The youngest of the SHP
Doc Q:

  • Doctor
  • Although he is a doctor, he does not usually cure, but is actually trying to poison everyone
    • He is even representing illness with his character as we see him always ill
    • Represents also death (coat colour of Stronger is pale, referring to the 4th apocalyptic rider)
  • Although he is still in his 20s, he is depicted as rather old looking


Since the 11th SHP is not confirmed, yet, I will remove their counterpart from the list as well. But if you have read my comments on the "nakama thread" you probably know, who I think is joining.

Laffitte:

  • Was a former police officer
  • Is cruel/violent towards people overstepping rules
    • Used excessive brutality against innocents back when he was an officer on duty
    • Wanted to kill Pizzaro when he disrespected BB and said he wanted to become captain
  • Is stealthy
  • Has manners, is polite and comes off as rather sophisticated
  • Is very intelligent and assesses a situation before taking action
  • Is oftentimes seen smiling
  • Comes around as rather underhanded (chapter 1081 when he whispers to BB, if they should steal Aokiji’s fruit)

  • Is a little perv
  • Loves music and is creative
  • Extroverted
    • quirky
  • Likes to make jokes and comes off as funny because of that

  • Loves Women and would never hurt one
  • Is a gentleman
  • Gets easily agitated when angered
  • Nice to children and other people
  • Feeds people, who are starving
  • I cannot decide if he is introverted or extroverted


Robin:

  • Is intelligent
  • Is perceptive about her surroundings
  • Introverted
  • Loves books and acts rather sophisticated
  • Silently voices when she finds things cute and adores them in silence
  • Acts selfless
  • Has a rather laid-back attitude when situations escalate – much so like Luffy


BBP:


Vasco Shot:

  • Dopey
  • Acts rather languid
  • Rather extroverted
  • Drinker Drinks a lot of alcohol and is often inebriated
  • Doesn’t care if someone gets hurt by his actions (chapter 1080)
  • His plans are not well thought through (chapter 1080)
  • Brutal?
  • Wanted to have fun with Hancock


Caterina Devon:

  • Extroverted
  • Cruel
  • Likes to wear clothes
  • Uses foul language (chapter 1081 uses the word “prick” meaning Akainu)
  • Collects throphies (heads from gorgeous women)


Aokiji:

  • Likes to flirt with women
  • Is rather lazy and has ha laid back attitude
  • Introverted or extroverted – I still cannot decide
  • Acts reasonable and is dependable

Have you found anything about Shot? And now that Aokiji is revealed to be a BBP - with whom do you see him?
