I doubt Swords have Dreams too but i can believe if the Swords Carry the wishes of their previous wielders but only the ones that were able to tame the Sword.
We are still unsure of the requirement for swords to become black blades. If there is such thing as "Bonding" with the swords then maybe The Swords carrying the Will/Wishes of the previous Wielder is something but not the blade itself having a Dream.
I think they work just like Merry.

I don't think it's just strong haki. As Hyogoro and Koushirou said, through haki the swordsman connects the sword. As I mentioned, swords have a will, we have already seen with Sandai and Enma.
I believe the sword has to accept its master to blacken. Ace and Gryphon never recognized their bearers and that's why they didn't blacken, even though they are very strong. Maybe because they don't purely follow the path of the sword, we don't know for sure.

Yes, i believe Swords are just like Ships
Imo it's related to Klabautermann
Klabautermann is basically Spirit of Ship, & i think Swords have Spirits too, it represents the manifestation of their will (Not Power or anything)
It actually applies to Devil Fruits too & other things in One Piece & i will share with you very interesting hints
First of all Ship Spirits (Klabautermann which btw exists in both One Piece & Real World Culture) are diligent creatures for their Masters (The Crew in this Case & Wielder in Swordsmen Case) & they are like that for those who take care of them (Such as Merry which loved SHs)
The Ship, Sword & Devil Fruit can all be used by the owners however "True Bond" can only happen when the will of their Spirits become one with them. In Ship's Case, it's by caring about it, in Sword Case, it's by taming it or proving yourself & in Devil Fruits, they call it "Awakening" or as Kaidou explained "Your Body, Mind & Powers become One"
Everything in One Piece works in harmony with these Spirits, it's when people are good that things start to bond with them & the world becomes harmonious & happy (Laugh Tale), but there is a second face to these Spirits !!
A Devil-Like Form, a Sinister Evil which only appears when the Ship is Doomed (Or in people's case, when they are going to Die)
And it's actually the Klabautermann that is blamed for such misery (You can check Wikipedia for all of this btw)
So if Ships have Spirits & according to Real-Life Mythology, they also have Sinister Forms which appear to Doomed Crew
Then Sword Presence should also have a Sinister Form which only becomes Visible to a Doomed Wielder !!
And this was hinted at back in Loguetown when Zoro took Sandai Kitetsu & Shop Owner said that this Sword brings Horrible Death to those who wield it due to being of very high Quality (Meito), he actually said this applies to all Kitetsu Swords !!
So do you see now why Zoro witnessed a Shinigami? That's actually the Sinister Form of his Sword which became visible only because Zoro is Doomed & about to Die.
The Story is much bigger than just Swords & Dreams
There is a reason Brook is a Skeleton whose entire Crew were Doomed, who returned from the Dead & became the embodiment of Laughter & considered the Funniest (At least by Luffy)
Brook's Story, Joy Boy, Laugh Tale, Meito Swords, Ship Spirits, Haki, Devil Fruits, Awakening, Noah, Ancient Weapons, Prophecies, Germa Experiments, The Moon, The Sun, Dragons, Voice of All Things ... etc It's all part of a Single Lore, of a Single Idea, they are all connected
And let me add two final Hints to further make you think more about this
Klabauterman comes from an old german word that means "Rumble" which means to make a Continuous Deep, Resonant Sound !!

If only people stop reading it from Power Level Perspective & focus on the Hints & Lore & Hidden Story, we would discover so much more
To summarize my Analysis in one sentence
Entire Story is actually a Coin, every Arc, every Character, every Chapter, every Mystery, every Dream ... etc are actually separated into 2 Faces/Parts, hence why this Manga is called "One Piece"
It basically means that if we don't see everything from two sides then we cannot understand One Piece
As for Black Blades, think of it this way
If everything has Two Faces/Forms/Sides, then what happens when we finally make them whole, make them "One Piece"
Before i give you answer, i need to explain one more thing about Spirits
The Spirits lingers & becomes stronger when there is Unjust/Unfair Death or Death without Fulfilling a Promise/Goal
(This idea is famous in Japan, it even exists in other Manga such as Hunter x Hunter & Naruto)
So imagine what happens to Enma when Oden was Killed Unfairly & Tricked & was prevented from fulfilling his Promise/Goal
Enma's Sinister Form of it's Spirit (Shinigami that Zoro Saw, similar to Ship's Klabautermann) cannot be tamed unless Oden is given Justice!
So returning to what i said about combining Two Sides, a Black Blade can only be forged when both of it's Spirits are Tamed
Zoro tamed The First Piece when he fought King, and that's the caring side of Enma which wants it's wielder to be worthy
But for the second side which is sinister & gives horrible deaths to the wielder, they must be tamed by fulfilling the promise that was left undone & was ruined by Death (This is basically the whole theme of One Piece about Inherited Will & Good vs Evil)
So Black Blades are very very rare because they are situational & basically "Fated" to happen
So likes of Roger, WB, Shanks, Rayleigh ... etc simply didn't turn them Black cuz they weren't Fated to, not because they lacked Skills
Zoro gonna turn Enma Black when he slays Kaidou (ZKK) which will finally remove the Sinister Presence of Enma & remove Zoro's Nerf

Not entirely like that, i only explained partially how Spirits work in One Piece
And i only explained Enma Case cuz it's clearly a very dangerous sword (Kuina's Sword is same Grade & yet Kid Zoro was able to carry it)
I explained the Shinigami Sighting & why Enma is difficult to fully tame
But the general idea is that Black Sword = Fated Sword
It's not necessarily about a Promise or Dream or Revenge, but my point is that you cannot forge a Black Sword in a normal way
It requires specific conditions that can only be fated, you cannot decide them
And i believe it has something to do with the Moon
There is a detail i don't wanna reveal yet about the Moon cuz it would spoil my upcoming theory
But think of the Moon as having it's own Will & it's the one who chooses who is granted specific powers
I mean you think it's coincidence that Oda drew the Full Moon when Zoro & Kuina made their Promise?
Or Minks transform when they look at Full Moon? And they become all White which is exactly like Sun God Nika
Or Hody who turned completely White because of those Energy Steroids which was the Treasure inside Tamatebako & if you read the real Tamatebako Legend, you find that it was opened by a man named Urashima (Same as the Shimotsuki Daimyo), not to mention that all Wano Families are named after Moons ... etc
The Moon holds Power, it has it's own Will
Zoro for example when he almost died against Mr. 1, he started talking about his Strange Heartbeat & that he can now hear the Heartbeat of everything both living & not, which is similar to what happened when Luffy almost died against Kaidou & then Drums of Liberation were heard
The Heartbeat is clearly related to willpower & everything has this energy, including the earth, sun & moon, even Oda confirmed this when he was asked about Sanji's Eyebrows, explaining that they are circular cuz they are related to the same energy that keeps the moon, sun & earth moving in harmony (Which is also related to why all Devil Fruits have those circles). I mean we saw that Smile Fruits were literally created under the light of sunflowers, so it's obvious that the moon & the sun aren't really normal, the sun's light holds certain power & the moon's light is reflection of sun's light, which apparently gives that power a different twist
The moon is the source of Black Swords & many other powers, it represents the witness of many events throughout entire history since dawn of men & it's the reason Human Tribes went to live there, giving themselves fake wings & came to be known as Skypieans, Birkans & Shandians, it's all for a certain project
So Zoro's Sword is gonna turn Black when a certain event happens under the full moon & that's what ZKK is all about
And i believe that after his Sword turns black, he will be interested in understanding the history of swords & wano
As for Mihawk & Ryuma, i cannot predict what happened to them that turned their Swords black & deemed them worthy as fated swordsmen, but it seems to be related to Dragons cuz Ryuma is known as Dragon Slayer & Dracule means both Dragon & Devil
