Character Discussion Character discussion thread: Nami

#1
And here's another character thread, this third being of course about the third Straw Hat Pirate who joined the crew (even if it took Arlong Park arc for her to definitively join the crew) and importance as a character and the most iconic and popular female character in One Piece worldwide, the greedy orange hair navigator and thief Nami.

What is your general opinion about Nami ? What do you like or dislike about her ? What are your favorite and least favorite aspects about her ? What do you think about her history, personnality, abilities and moments in the manga ?
What are your favorite moments and fights with her ? What are the relations with other characters that you find the most interesting ? What do you think about her designs and art evolution ?

I like Nami and i think she is a good female lead, altough Boa Hancock would be a good rival in this role of "female lead of the story". About her design: of course she is a sex bomb now,so i will never complain about that, but i have to say that in her early look she was also cute in a less "fanservice" way,and maybe more relatable for both male and female readers. I wish we would see more her "thief and seductive" side, like Fujiko from Lupin 3rd. I loved her relationship with Carina in the movie One Piece Gold.

She was a decent character pre-time skip. Her character is written poorly post time skip. She is nothing but looks and memes. Even the scene where she finally has her moment of saying that Luffy will become the Pirate King was butchered by Oda. She said that Luffy will never stop, followed by a meme death face. Totally without any tension.

She's boring. Her only moment post time skip is forgiving Jinbe for what Arlong did to her and that's it.

Her bitch side is annoying and not that funny anymore. I expected more from her after the time skip.

Design wise, she skyrocketed.

She’s the best written character in the series and my second favorite after Zoro

Her backstory explaining why she’s so obsessed with money to her being willing to give up all her money to save Camie is such great development. Even though she’s physically weak, she always puts her life on the line for her friends and crew like with Ms Doublefinger and most recently with her telling Ulti that Luffy will become PK in the face of death.

There’s a reason she’s one of the 3 main characters of One Piece along with Luffy and Zoro.

I always Felt that did her dirty by making her Navigating skills more or less irrelevant within the story after so many years of it being made out to be a big deal

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the other crews shouldn't also have great navigators. More that her navigating skills should have been given more focus since it's what's supposed to make her special.

The Vivre Card reliance and the fact that we are never ever shown pirate crews dying due to having inferior navigators imo made her feel less relevant Post Timeskip. Which is weird as one would think her skills would be needed more with the New World Weather and sea being apparently the most dangerous in the world

Nami is a fantastic female lead. Almost deliberately, as the second member to join, she contrasts Zoro in the roles she brings to the crew.

Instead of strength, she offers brains. Instead of a kindred spirit, she's a counter balance to Luffy's antics. By that, she guides Luffy, both out on sea and in general situations. She reminds him not to be careless, not to make rash decisions, giving an out of the box support.

Of all the Strawhats, her loyalty for Luffy comes from the most heartfelt displays. Nami was introduced during Orange Town. That arc had heavy emphasis on treasure, and what treasure means to someone. Nami, the catburglar, as well as Buggy, were presented as valuing materialistic treasure. For Luffy, it was his Strawhat, and the powerful connection it holds between Luffy and Shanks. This theme carries towards Arlong Park, where we learn who were Nami's treasures this whole time: her home village. Luffy, considers Nami his "treasure" as well, for all he needed in order to face Arlong wasn't some sob story or deal, all he needed to know was that his nakama needed help.

Nami is arguably the most indebted Strawhat to Luffy for what he did for her. He shattered years of imprisonment, and gave her the opportunity to finally realize her dream.

Since so, Nami's expressed how important Luffy is to her, either through a general expression of loyalty with the others, wanting Usopp to develop a weapon for her so she can be of better service to Luffy, being the most emotional over training during the 2 years for her captain's sake, standing by Luffy's side alone in a Yonko's dangerous territory, and finally risking to meet death just because she cherishes the dream her captain strives for too much. Luffy has become a treasure to her.

Beyond that, she's just so much fun as a character. As the navigator, she's in charge of the day to day sailings, and everyone highly respects her skills and listen to what she has to say.

The crew is full of fools who wouldn't know what to do with themselves without her. And act out of line, you get a fist full of love which rivals Garp's.

These assertive traits are a possible adoption from her adopted mother, who was tough as nails marine woman, who took no nonsense from anyone. Once more, she has a soft spot for children, specifically abandoned ones, as seen when she refused to leave the children at Punk Hazard behind. Possibly, this is in relation to her being orphaned and understanding the difficulties of a child without a parent.

Nami has experienced countless perils, overcome many trials, and grown so much despite just being a relatively normal person. But this only makes her more relatable and endearing for facing the difficulties.

And did I mention she loves money? And loves to trick suckers? This sly cat.

Nami is the only truly solid character within the whole series....which is suprising since usually most Shonen female leads are shit.

But with Nami we dont expect much from her....so in terms of combat she can never disapoint us much. Unlike a character like Sakura. However she still proves to be useful in combat, navigation and within the plots of each arc. She also brings the emotional depth within the story and has a good ability with connecting with characters.....(something she shares with Luffy and Sanji). And even though she's a normal human being....who isnt strong at all, she shows immense bravery and trust within her captain and crew as a whole. When the moment is serious.....she will not falter, even she is a coward.

She's also beautfiul, funny, and her abilities are really cool. Not much inconsistencies in her character nor has anything drastic changed about her since Pre Timeskip.....other than her boo....I mean hair.

What is your general opinion about Nami?
Nami is one of the top characters of One piece. The Romance Dawn Trio represent One piece for me.

What do you like or dislike about her?
Like: Her kindness. She is the real kindest crewmate. And not Judge's Son.
Dislike: Her beat Luffy gag. Lol.

What are your favorite and least favorite aspects about her ?
Favorite: Kindness, her special treatment of Luffy.
Least Favorite: PoTS, Oda accentuating her titties. She should've been kept simple.

What do you think about her history, personality, abilities and moments in the manga?
History: I didn't reallly like her background. I cannot blame her or Belmere. All I can say is fuck Arlong.
Personality: Well-rounded
Abilities: Cheesy, broken, and complicated
What are your favorite moments and fights with her?
Favorite Moment: When she asked Luffy to save her. Onigashima against Ulti
Favorite Fight: her fight against Cracker. She fought him despite being outclassed, yet still disrespecting a Yonko commander to his face.
What are the relations with other characters that you find the most interesting?
Luffy and Usopp.
Luffy because of WCI, she smacked the fiya outta Judge's Son.
Usopp because of Skypeia.
What do you think about her designs and art evolution?
