It kills mainly people who have not a good health situation from the start so the elderly and people with serious health problems yet there have been some exceprions. Talking about Italy we have about 80 deaths, 2500 contagions and 160 who managed to beat it. Among the deaths the younger was a 55 yo yet among the hospitalized (intenaive care) there have been even young people. Our patient 1 was an athletic ~35 old dude (scientists think it was because he did a very intesive training, 2 half marathons in a week or something like that, that his immune system was weaker and so he is now in inteisve care). This to say that even if we are young and healthy it is always better to do what we can to avoid it. Also think about people who lives in contact with you, even more if they are not so well health wise.
Then, always in Italy, we have started to use stronger means to fight the spread of the virus. These are the ones everybody could and should do to have less chances to take this virus.
- Wash your hands frequently (this is the most common) and don't touch your eyes, mouth or nose.
- avoid shakes of hands or and kisses when you meet other people.
- "the droplet" aka keep a safety distance of at least a meter with other people even when speaking, same goes for cinemas, libraries etc.
Of course this is related to the situation in Italy so no need to panic yet if and when the times comes these can come in handy.
Then there are the others like close the schools and universities, quarantenes etc but the individual safety protocols are more fit to the thread.
