Oda likes to create certain character types for each generation he covers. There is Inherited Will with Luffy/Roger/Joyboy. Even Garp, who is still alive, is paralleled by Smoker (cornered future Piratekings, argued with HQ alot). Even though Imu is still alive, there should be a character from Luffy's generation, who has similar personality and goals. The obvious picks would be Doflamingo and Blackbeard. Both want to rule the world. But they want to do so openly. Imu decided to do it in secret, to be unkown. Doffy and BB are too grandiose for that. They don't really want what Imu has right know. There are nothing like Imu personalitywise.
Law is though. He likes to be alone, has few friends. As a little boy, he told Doffy he wanted to kill humanity. Like Imu, he is a good scemer and likes to control things from the shadows. Doffy saw that potential in Law and made him his student. There are some scenes that could be foreshadowing for Law turning to the dark side. Strawhats warning Luffy from being to trusting when they made the alliance to take down Kaido. Doffy telling Luffy that Law is a traitor.
I like this alot but am not fully convinced of it. Two big reasons against it: Oda had no big plans for Law at the beginning and Law might die due to using the Eternal Youth Operation. Something like this should have been planned right from the start. I am not saying Law would make himself secret king. Just that he would try. He might betray Luffy at some point to take over the World Government. Imu might have been a friend of Joyboy too at some point. Maybe Law regrets his betrayal and then uses the Eternal Youth Operation to make up for it.
