Light is the smarter MC
Monster imo has better support/role characters
Monster has better plot
Monster has a better ending too
If you reversed them Tenma wont go as far or is as cynical as Light whereas Light vs Johan will be good

Monster > Death Note personally.
Death Note fucked up moment you went to season 2 with the whole near and shit i dropped it never gave a single fuck to rewatch it after that

It's intellectually more satisfying and also more exciting thanks to the hax of some characters.
