With the new chapters coming, we are mostly focused on Awakening. It would have been great if Oda could introduce a new concept to DF. Such as DF having a passive hidden ability which the user has to figure out either by luck or by seeing previous users.
To be honest, I am not a big fan of the Nika Nika no mi reveal regarding the DF's of Luffy. In my opinion, Oda should have gone for another concept where he does not change Luffy 's fruit identity. Instead, give the gum gum no mi this hidden passive ability which grants the user two awakenings. In this case, the minor awakening can be G4 and G5 can be the major awakening. G5 is unlocked only if the user has full mastery over G4 and haki. During the raid, Luffy should have managed to defeat Kaido with extreme difficulties using G4 and with the support of Yamato and the alliances. After the raid succeeded, Luffy decides to work very hard to master CoC coating with the help of Yamato and by the same time Luffy developed G5 in secret while training excessively. This can later be a great reveal when luffy will face a powerful opponent and then we can have flashback of him unlocking this on Wano. Since the world is in chaos, Wano is untouched and Luffy got plenty of time to spend on Wano to train and become more powerful so than he can fight an emperor 1v1. In this case, this would make the Gum Gum no mi special without breaking everything, the gum gum no mi grants its user two awakenings but the major awakening can only be accessed if the user has 100% mastery of the minor awakening and 100% mastering of haki. These conditions seem fair and achievable and require hard work. Luffy has always been about hard work and creativity. It is always satisfying seeing luffy using a mere rubber fruit winning against people who can create fire, magma, etc just because Luffy is skillful with his fruit and relies on his imagination. G5 design is the same except we remove the Luffy laughing for nothing.
Just as a fruit is unique, Oda can introduce this new concept that each fruit has a passive hidden ability granted to the user. Some are activated by default as soon as you eat the fruit but for some it requires the user to unlock it.. i.e Enel's fruit will revive the user if possible after his heart stops like defibrillators (active by default). BB's fruit can have like a special kind of void for himself allowing him to store 1 or 2 fruits and to gain access to their ability one at a time (User has to figure this out and also it is active by default). However, the restriction for this to work , BB needs to be in possession of the fruit itself and BB must collect the fruit personally as soon as the user died. Dofflamingo can create microscopic strings that can stitch his internal organs if damaged, though it is not an effective method of healing, these strings when deployed will do the necessary to provide basic medical treatment. (User needs to activate this skill through complete mastering of his fruit and haki.)
Usually for the power given by a fruit, a passive ability is given and a major drawback is given (not able to swim). As for BB's fruit, his fruit has two major drawbacks, he is deadweight in water and he also takes more damage.
