Character Discussion Did Joyboy even know Imu, or was it all just a one-sided obsession?

Kaido doesn’t hate or fear Oden at all. He spent his entire life hoping to meet someone like him, strong enough to give him the epic fight he always wanted. Dying in a battle like that would’ve been the culmination of everything for him.
On the other side you have Imu and five old men who don’t want to die at all and spend their lives hidden in an unreachable palace, doing everything they can to make sure Joyboy and Davy Jones never return because they fear them.
Feels a lot more like Orochi than Kaido to me.
This is because Oden didn't to anything else, except putting scar on Kaido. But we don't know that about JB. Even Vegapunk said that he doesn't know who is really evil between those two

I mean, Imu is the Devil Fruit user, why would he even desire to sink the whole world? And for 800 years, if that was his goal, he would be able to accomplish it without ancient weapons, no?
We already know very well what Imu’s goal was. It’s pretty clear from what Gunko said when confronting the Straw Hats.

To put it simply: everyone had to die, leaving only them as gods, with their slaves to serve them and keep them alive.

If Imu won it was probably thanks to Uranus. He overused it until it ran dry, causing global destruction and sinking the world.
Even if Imu did destroyed the world or Davy Jones did most of it before him, Joyboy was still able confront Imu if Uranus doesn't kill Joyboy, and they should have clashed before Imu spamming Uranus.

I’m not trying to insist that they never met, but I do think it’s a possibility and it kinda makes me laugh.
In any case, I don’t think Joyboy was defeated and killed as the result of a fight. It feels like he already knew he had lost even before dying. Otherwise, why leave the One Piece at Laugh Tale? Why leave an apology letter to Poseidon and the Haki knot to Emet? Those all feel more like the actions of someone like Roger, a man who knows he can’t do anything anymore and instead sets the stage for a future victory.
Right now, I can’t really picture Joyboy going out with his crew to fight Imu in some heroic last stand like Oden with his samurai. He gives me more Roger and his crew vibes. At some point they realized there was nothing more they could do and eventually disbanded.
The act that truly ended the conflict was most likely the use of Uranus that destroyed the world. I don’t really see how someone like Imu could have defeated Joyboy without relying on an Ancient Weapon.

I think he went on a suicide confrontation as there is nothing else he can do anymore. His allies failed him, some were mind controlled by covenant. He could also lost Pluton to Imu/Davy Jones that how Pluton was cited in Alabasta's poneglyph. Imu has that big strawhat in the freezer which likely acquired from that last confrontation.

I don’t know how he died, but he definitely knew he had already lost before that and chose to leave everything to the future. I’m not sure what led him to that realization, maybe like you said it was the loss of his allies.

What I’m sure about is that he didn’t lose in a fair, direct fight against Imu. Someone who can wipe out the Gorosei and bring Imu to his knees screaming with a single burst of Haki is clearly on a completely different level than his enemies.

The loss of his allies and Imu relying on Ancient Weapons are the only things that really make sense to explain why he stopped.

Maybe he wasn't getting a fair fight in the end and Davy Jones might still be alive.
