1)the title didnt exist so he was able to clutch it without specific parameters.
2)the majority of the road glyphs at the time dont seem to be held by emporer level pirates. Which brings me to 3.
3) were there any emporer level pirates when roger was a rookie? Who were the pirates 30+ years older than roger when he sailed?
4) were sengoku, garp, and kong the only marine heavy hitters? No warlords, pacifista, seraphim?
5) who were his rivals down to the number? Sure, whitebeard was his equal, but who on WB side took on Rayleigh and gaban? Or later on, oden?

I don't care how strong Roger is... REALISTICALLY if you put him in this era there's no way he becomes the Pirate King (without the same plot armor that Luffy has)
When Roger was on his journey people didn't even know the road poneglyphs existed/what they were used for
Big Mom had one and the rest were spread out throughout the world
His biggest rival and equal Whitebeard gave him the key to one of the poneglyphs (Wano's) and a translator through Oden

If we rank his 2nd journey to Grandline after he found out he was sick (which took him like what, 2 years?) then it's way easier than the road the SHs took. The only life-and-death battle that he had really was against Shiki's armada. Then the poneglyhs with he took for free, along with a translator.
