As for what Shanks did to become a Yonko, it seems to be one of those nebulous things that Oda will never answer.
Beating Marco & the remnants of the WB pirates got Blackbeard a 2.2 billion bounty.

Unless there was someone considered a much greater threat than Marco with over 1.4 billion bounty and a force equivalent to the WB remnants, it wouldn’t make much sense.

The other possibility is probably getting a tie against one of the older Yonko, but it’s always made to seem like they haven’t actually crossed each other much.
