They pretty much accomplished all their goals that they set out to do when they arrived on Egghead. Meanwhile the Straw Hats FAILED to protect Vegapunk (Stella)...

is this the first time the villains / antagonists win in an arc?

Yeah, pretty much, since Luffy was someone they didn't prepare for, and even still, they had him running the entire time since he was unable to take over the island. The five elders, kizaru, Lucci, and Kaku, along with the seraphim are safe and fine, and the straw hats didn't do any lasting damage.

Or else they would have met the same fate as law and kidd.

Warcury and jupiter would have killed luffy after he ran out of g5.
Everyone would have died if Giants didn't interfere.
Then we have emeth , and then joyboy haki burst.

the marine was trash in this arc, vice admirals were crushed like they were nothing by bonny and franky and kizaru was nothing to luffy, all the pressure was created by the gorosei only, even vega was killed already by saturn (vp said if he moves he dies) before getting lazered by kiz.

marine is weak af, i did not imagine to say this but, it over for them in marineford, when even the strongest marine lost to an already dead yonko and when they surrendered to shanks before getting humilated by teach. it was all there
