Powers & Abilities Do Black Blades Require Conqueror Haki?

#22
Not a fan of the idea that you can only achieve the absolute pinnacle of swordsmanship if you’re lucky enough to be born with conqueror’s haki

It should be something that anyone with enough grit, determination, and willpower can achieve

The bar should be set incredibly high of course (which it is, only Mihawk and Ryuma are confirmed black blade wielders) but it should be something that anyone is capable of on paper imo

That would also make it even more impressive to me. If hypothetically speaking any swordsman ever could make a black blade but failed to do so

I think black blades will involve sacrifice. Mihawk has a tragic past, Ryokugyu is implied to have a tragic past so much so that he tattoo-ed 'Lover's Suicide' on himself, and I'm sure Ryuma experienced his fair share of hardships. I think it will involve something along the lines of a master swordsman imparting their soul into a blade in tragic circumstances - i.e. killing a lover, killing a friend etc

If we are to describe things in characteristics and specialist terms, then I think there actually is a particular way to look at this that makes sense.

The World's Strongest Swordsman title is the same thing as saying the King of Swordsmen. If we put it into those terms, then the Black Blade is the trademark characteristic of this character type.

I believe a characteristic of Conqueror Specialists is that they have a powerful soul. Prior to being able to use Conqueror Haki, Armament Specialists are just considered typical swordsmen.

That "powerful soul" part is what makes the Black Blade. It's temporary with only Armament Haki because it's not powerful enough, but when Conqueror Haki is infused it causes the Armament Haki to become amplified. It's still the same thing as before, it's a matter of residual energy, but it never reaches a critical point until a swordsman has Conqueror Haki.

This wouldn't indicate that the King of Swordsmen is the strongest Conqueror Specialist, but it does mean a powerful soul is required to be the strongest swordsman.

Oda has oversimplified the story for every weird power not link to devil fruit to be haki. His last haki plaything is Conqueror infusion. Therefore black blade is a haki based power which is either achievable thanks to conqueror coating or by an higher haki power.

What you got to keep in mind is that « black blades » is most likely Zoro last powerup so do you think that is last powerup gonna be linked to something outdated like CoA or to the new shiny toy?

My line of reasoning currently is it requires both high level Armament and some Conqueror Haki, but to make the Black Blade it is not necessary to be the strongest Conqueror Specialist.

If only CoA were required, considering the sheer number of CoA users even by applying basic statistics, we would have seen dozens of black blades by now.

Just like basic CoC is a one-in-a-million feat among the population, being able to forge a Black Blade is probably a one-in-a-million feat among advCoC users.

The issue here that I see is that there is a discrepancy between Conqueror Specialists and Armament Specialists.

Conqueror Specialists aren't able to make Black Blades because they don't focus Armament Haki to that level. However, Armament Specialists can access a degree of Conqueror Haki, without being a Conqueror Specialist, and that's what defines it.

If you just say "anyone with Conquerors should be able to make them" then it becomes too broad. Why aren't all the Conqueror Specialists making them too? It's because they're not Armament Specialists.

Can't mihawk be armament and CoC specialist?

It's pretty simple when you just think the King of the Blade has a special Black Blade. Ryuma was referred to as the God of the Blade previously and he had one.

The only part of that you guys are taking issue with is that with this reasoning the King of the Blade is not a traditional Conqueror Haki user, and unlikely to be more powerful than the most powerful traditional users.
