The Davy Clan so far seems to have actual physical traits that are noticeable

How did Garling found out about the secret of Davy's remnants on the island, I think Shanks mother told Garling when they have a short relationship. Garling didn't tell her about his Celestial Dragon identity, so she slipped the secret to him. The way she naturally asked him to stay on the island proved it.

It's not about covering. Just leaving it ambiguous. The same way he doesn't advertise he is a Figarland and a celestial dragon he could choose not to reveal he is a D. The world Government would follow along since they like to suppress the names of famous Ds.

How is it ambiguous if they publically do not go by that name?

Shanks does not advertise he's a Figarland because he doesn't want the world to know he's a celestial dragons. But there's no reason for him to cover the D, same with Buggy.
