It's not half bad, he was lame at first, but now that I think about it his mildly gothic/ Victorian era inspired design with his flame fruit fits well with the revolutionary army. Ace was more cringe anyway.

About outshining Dragon, that's exactly what Dragon wants. He's not in it for fame, he's a very dark person who wouldn't necessarily want to assume the limelight. Having a promising youth take the face of his cause works best for his goals
