I think Zoro only knew some people from a famous bloodline (Kozaburo and Kuina), but he isn't one himself.

I think it would be cool if he was revealed as a Shimotsuki, but even if he is from a prominent family, his otherworldly skills can’t be accredited to that alone. This motherfucker has survived incredible injuries from powerful opponents up to and including the (current) World’s Strongest Swordsman, and not only has he ultimately toppled almost all of them, he’s reached a new level - one comfortably above the vast majority of his peers - in every battle. Nature is one thing, but this guy sculpted himself into one of the most formidable swordsmen in the world through grit and determination…those traits don’t come from your blood, they come from your heart

I still don’t understand why Oda decided to give Sanji that lame ass irrelevant unnecessary back story in WCI.

I think almost the whole proved a mess. But I think Oda probably calculated it. He thought it was best to introduce an arc of that kind prior to real yonko fighting arc, and one of the best ways to do that was to portray a character as clumsy as Big Mom as well as a weird plot.
