I know there are levels of fodders but usually that's their path, being destroyed handily. Look at Jack striking out 200 Sulong minks like that. It's easy to see.

You didn't even need either of them. Just have Luffy find out there was a Tournament on an Island where the prize is the Mera Mera no Mi, and the Straw Hats would have gone there, and then a conflict could have been established after they got to the Island.
