He had his own business going, his own plans, etc. the fact that he was working with Kaido doesn't actually "makes him look bad" at all.
This extreme behavior is much more on Luffy's area, but that's just his style. It shouldn't automatically apply to other characters that have their own circumstances.

It’s not just Luffy it’s something a lot of people in the verse believe. Hell even Moriah would rather go down fighting to save Absalom against an emperor than bend the knee to one.

It’s not that he looks bad it’s trying to use Doffy surrendering to the yonko as a way to hype him which I don’t agree with.

Putting power levels to the side he’s a lot more like Blackbeard and shanks than the members of cross guild

1. Went and stayed in the new world having the strongest and influential crew only after the emperors
2. Still didn’t give up his dream of going after the one piece or taking over the world and watching it burn (Blackbeard)
3. Wasn’t just hiding under an emperor just to hide but to plot and use them as a way to further their own grand plans (Blackbeard)
4. He’s also coincidentally a fallen celestial dragon turned pirate (shanks)

And also don't you guys remember that Doffy's goal is to become PK? so maybe the Doffy-Kaido alliance is probably temporary, until one of the 2 rises to more power and the other kills the other, Monet before dying and trying to bomb the others in the Punk Hazard arc, she wished Doffy the best and hoped that he'd achieve his goal in becoming PK, also look at this video, Trebol stated that Doffy's madness is about to destroy everything:
