Character Discussion Dragon is the most misunderstood character in the series

#41
I dont think Lragon is weak, mind you, i just think he is a dogshit character Oda failed, like 99% of the old gen or "stands in the background and does nothing just wait 1200 chapters more bro he is gonna be brazy" characters

Its a miracle that Xebec and harald exist after that massacre that it was GV for characters like WB or Roja

I know you didn't talk about his strength 👍

But about waiting for him to do something, like Sabo did more than that mf for less time and i don't blame Morgans to hype him above Dragon.

Dragon gets the most underserved slander in the entire series simply for not realizing he’s in a battle Shounen and has plot armor. Take for example the Ginny situation. Dragon is slandered for not raiding Marijois right then. But if you look at it rationally, this is completely logical and all other raids on Marijois in the story have been results of plot armor. All 8 holy knights, the Gorosei (who are known as fighters since they carry the title Warrior God), the Commander-in-chief and the fleet admiral should all be there. Not to mention how close it is to Marineford and how easily multiple Admirals could be sent there.

And even if Dragon was still powerful enough to take on all these fighters on his own, him mobilizing just because Ginny got captured would actually harm his character not help it. It implies that none of the thousands of other slaves in MJ were worth caring about until until Dragon was personally effected.

It has never been in Dragon’s character to ignore the suffering the masses to selfishly only care for his friends. In fact we are literally shown this dichotomy between Dragon and his father in God Valley. Garp is willing to stay a Marine despite all he knows to protect the rank and file Marines who he considers family just like Luffy, WB, and even Kaido. Dragon, on the other hand, can’t accept this. When he leaves God Valley he threatens to execute his entire platoon if they don’t rescue the survivors. His duty first and foremost is to freeing the entire world and there is no group of close confidants that could ever dissuade him from this goal.

While it has already been noted that Dragon and Luffy used the exact same phrase in Japanese when rescuing the survivors of God Valley and declaring War on the WG respectively, there can be no comparison between in the two in terms of heroism. Dragon in GV risks the wrath of the WG while being a marine and furthermore he does this for people completely unknown to him whereas Luffy in EL explicitly says he only cares about Robin. Similarly in Impel Down while Hannyabal lectures him about the disaster that would occur if hordes of rapists were released from ID, Luffy only responds that he has to save Ace. Make no mistake there is only 1 truly heroic Monkey D. in the story.

Dragon also catches flack for not trusting Sabo but what people don’t realize is that the Revolutionary Army is not a pirate crew like the strawhats. Luffy has no goals beyond the adventure itself and even then would sacrifice that for his friends. Dragon needs to change the world so he cannot nor should he place personal bonds above the ultimate goal. This is why Dragon’s sole criterion for his soldiers is discipline. He doesn’t want or need a personal relationship with them. A good illustration of the differences between father and son is how they celebrate. Luffy ends every arc with a party but Dragon censures his solidiers from celebrating any victory apart from the final one. Luffy is a Vagabond whereas Dargon is a man with an unchanging goal in life.

I think the fault is on Oda's hand solely. While we all understand these reasons we as readers should feel the actual impact of how much dragon has achieved and how he did it over the years. But we readers never get to see any of it. Main reason is dragon's whole decades of work has easily been outshined by a pirate crew of just 10. It's Oda own fault as lacks the ability to balance things out or be realistic with the world he built himself. With what Luffy has already done he should have easily been the most wanted man by now but nah Oda would let dragon keep that title while not showing anything notable but at the same time let Luffy and his crew always do the impossible with much more impact to the world but never get their bounties raised near to the level of dragon. This is not about the character itself but rather Oda's inability to write a good logical story

@kekaro one of the reasons why i laugh at Dragon.
I dont care about that tbh.
Yeah the revos are bums, but that actually make sense. They are the most selfless faction and their troops comes from probally rescued slaves.

You compare this to Crossguild, for example, which is an alliance of different ideologies and has probally already a standing army more powerful than the revos cause, with the promise of gold and such, in couple months

My really personal big problem with Dragon is more like him being on his ass doing nothing remarkable while people say "wait for him doing X". And oda uses him as a total idiot where people needs to find headcanons to make him like their headcanon version. That "ehm actually you know its actually super smart why Dragon was doubting his number 2 because of a fucking newspaper" is just one of many instances

The newest headcanon of how they clamor for relevancy is that he is zaza. Which makes the Terminal scene in retrospective dogshit cause he didnt make it rain there, but they dont care about that, power level man gotta have god fruit

I feel this with other characters too, like Mihawk, Shanks etc.

For example, let's take Saint Shanks right? Giga powerful, big good, yada yada. If that's true, he is a dogshit character cause he does nothing but sit on his ass for 20 years getting drunk in bars without changing the world for the better besides aura farming in Marineford or making pirates out of young impressionable kids.

(That's why i have an issue with being him that strong, but not for powerscaling reasons, i explained it here if you are interested and bored, i go in depth here for example, why i think Shanks being glazed this much is harmful for the story):

And like i said, characters who are among my favorites, like WB are not exempt from that either.
Oda genuinely wrote GV as "oh i guess Xebec is evil now, i dont need to double check, let's bail", which is incredibly bad and makes the character objective worse. The Oden situation was already handled dogshit too for WB and Roja

tldr: Oda cant write the characters he introduced/mentioned early in good ways, and also fucks up the world building, cause the manga is too long for his writing style

@Sentinel maybe interested too in my thoughts about that

Dragon has done far more against WG compared to Luffy we legit know of 15+ countries the Revs liberated.
