So.. I have an idea about how it works.
1. Ryuma's Era
- Shusui = Katana used in 1 Sword Style.
- The Katana is a Japanese longsword that is designed for close combat situations.
- In One Piece, Katanas are often used to perform 1 handed sword techniques despite being 2 handed weapons. Although, it is true that Ryuma sometimes performs 2 handed sword techniques.
2. Mihawk's Era
- Yoru = Greatsword used in 1 Sword Style.
- The Greatsword is a European sword that is better suited for thrusting attacks from a distance.
- In One Piece, Greatswords are often used to perform 2 handed sword techniques. Although, it is true that Mihawk sometimes performs 1 handed sword techniques.
3. Zoro's Era
- Enma = Katana used in 3 Sword Style.
- Originally used by Oden in 2 Sword Style.
