Luffy's Gear Five has left the community in shambles at being unable to explain the wacky and ridiculous phenomenon. I am sure Oda did this on purpose to throw us for a loop.
Before we get into the meat and potatoes. It's important we understand how Luffy goes into Gear Five and why he might become all white like. Something we finally cleared up about his color scheme, so I can finally share my theory on his matter.
In SBS 8, Chapter 69 Oda got asked a question if Luffy is natural or synthetic rubber. Oda replied "Natural." This is important because the natural form of rubber is white sticky-gooey liquid that can latch onto things, stretch and it's overall extremely flexible and mobile.
Some examples of things Luffy is doing that could be explained by his nature as natural rubber are. How the Gear Fourth attacks keep on stretching and changing the trajectory without losing its speed or mobility.
A visual depiction would be when Doflamingo was surprised his attacks kept stretching without ripping into Luffy or stopping. Another is when Kaido notes that bending the trajectory is impossible, given the nature of rubber.
When we know for a fact. Luffy can make it so he can rip his arms as he tried back when he was caged in WCL. But in his G4, there does not seem to be any limit and he can keep stretching as long as he wants. Kinda like a rubber band. If you keep stretching, it will snap.
Currently, I have only one explanation. Luffy can do these seemingly impossible things given the nature of rubber because he inches closer to his awakened form, where these things are normal for someone that is really natural rubber.
An important thing to observe about the gears is that Luffy by quickening his blood circulation, releases a lot of steam, and he gets a red tint to his body (anime shows this better), which indicates his temperature increases because his body works much faster than before.
This is the KEY to understanding G5. Now let's discover the other KEYS. Law in awakening can bypass BM body without hurting her could be one. Luffy seemingly does it a lot. But there's also Kid turning people into magnet, like Luffy turning people into rubber.
I think this panel is the most important. Luffy gets shriveled up after overusing G5. Kaido goes as far as to note he's going to kill himself. Luffy tells his "heartbeat" to get LOUD again and then he re-enters G5.
I think this means Luffy's heart is beating at tremendous speed and that's the essence of G5 in a nutshell. He gets a white color scheme because he converts into his natural rubber form, that white liquid. Kaido even tells us Luffy's transformation is pure white.
So how does it work? Luffy's bodily temperature increases to such a point that he starts melting, this was shown to us in chapter 1043, when he first awakened. You can also see steam rising from his body and mouth, indicating an increase in temperature inside of him.
There is also one point you need to keep in mind that I mentioned earlier and that's the fact Kaido tells us Luffy can influence others around him with this ability. In the same way, Kid turns people into a magnet.
That's the explanation for G5. Now let's see how we can describe the RIDICULOUS content in the chapter. When Luffy's eaten, you see him struggling, limbs sticking out, but now it makes more sense if this is merely Luffy turning Kaido into rubber and stretching out his skin.
Still, don't trust me? Here's your second evidence. Kaido's implying "Luffy turned his body into rubber." At first, glance, grabbing Kaido's nose from inside of his eye seems like toon force/magic, but I think he's stretching the eye to grab it.
Now when Luffy concaved into Kaido's kanabo looking like the sun from Soul Eater of Shigechi from Jojo Part 4. This can be explained by the fact he's all gooey-sticky like we know for a fact is the nature of natural rubber.
If Luffy was using Toon Force. He wouldn't be yelling out in pain or showing visual expressions of pain and discomfort. Even after latching onto Kaido's kanabo.
To explain next panel you need to remember when Doffy kicked Luffy in G4. The kick sunk into his stomache at first, rather than pushing Luffy or rebounding. It didn't bounce back until Luffy wanted it to. I think, Luffy could be releasing air here for a bit to release tension.
This now should show us that Luffy can be bouncy while still rubbery, so when Kaido clubs him into the ground, Luffy transforms it into rubber to use as a springboard when Kaido releases the tension on the attack.
Altough, some things are still hard to explain. One is when Luffy ignites air on fire by running like the roadrunner. And the fact his eye pops out from his socket, but this could be a design choice by Oda to mesh things well with the ridiculousness we see in the chapter.
Now let me bring up one more interesting idea. Don't you think Luffy is like a Zoan, Paramecia, and somewhat of a Logia in one? We cannot say if Oda planned it, but I got faith in him, so I will say confidently he PLANNED it.
Paramecia: properties of rubber Zoan: ability to transform Semi-logia: natural rubber when heated up to a melting point???
And there you have it. Do you have a better understanding of the absurd and ridiculous behind G5? This is really a double trap laid by Oda. I still believe there is a reason chapter 1043 is also called RESIN and this reason should hopefully be clearer after reading this thread.
There's one thing I forgot to add. Luffy punching through Kaido's skull. You can see visible marks that his skin is wrapping around Luffy's fist. So his stretching out his skull before snapping back into place, really giving Kaido terrifying blow.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to read through
