It made a lot more sense for one of BBs top guys to get a df from one of WB’s top commanders than a fodder.

WB’s crew was notorious for having great devil fruits, bb defeated them, but did not appear to take advantage of the opportunity to collect exceptional devil fruits. Even if bb didn’t want them for himself, it made no sense for him not to take at least Marco’s and Jozu’s dfs for his crew.

Another theory I liked was Robin being Roger’s daughter. IMHO it fits a lot more neatly than Ace, which Oda admitted was a last-minute decision.
