Character Discussion Feat Uzumaki Khan - Why Big Mom is a Poorly Written Character with Terrible Portrayal

#21
People who dislike Big Mom and have zero understanding of her character are just a bunch of battle junkies who think characterization is dictated by strength.

Just because someone is super strong, it doesn't disqualify them from having their own individual humanized personalities which makes them susceptible to everyday occurrences like every other individual on the fucking planet.

Some of yall need to put down the battle Shonen genre, as it's warped your minds into thinking super strong = infallible.

Do me a favor. Give me a nice long detailed explanation how the situations that Oda puts Big Mom into, contradicts her simpleminded personality and child like characterization.

Big Mom is a result of what would happen if you gave a 10 year old ultimate power, and it's original, fresh and fucking brilliant to have someone like that be one of the pinnacle forces of power in a fictionalized World. No matter how much she screws up, makes a fool of herself, gets clowned on etc.. etc.. It's all offset by the fact that she was born an absolute Monster.

This is what sets One Piece apart from every other trope filled series that has ever existed. Every action a character takes is dictated by their characterization and not their strength, and not every character who is super strong is limited to the same old tired ass trope of being infallible on every level.

I wouldn't say Big Mom is a poorly written character although I wouldn't say she is a great written character either, Big Mom is still a interesting character if you ignore Oda's gag treatment of her.

With the exception of certain moments, her portrayal in Wano has been bad. I don't mind if Oda wants to give Big Mom some gag moments but the gag moments he is giving to her is just going way too far, Oda would never give those same gag moments to another Yonko like Kaido or Shanks.

Also despite Oda's treatment of Big Mom, at least he still portrays her as a very powerful character.

The BM hate is warranted but Blame Oda not her for the way he portrayed her, a top tier, being clowned on by litteral fodder again and again and again and again.
Unfortunately the people who work with Oda will never call him out because as we all know Oda is a "god" and everything he writes is perfect.

The only ones who do are Meme wankers and some Don Luffione fans who just can't accept that its okay for characters apart from Pirate Jesus Don Luffione to beat a Yonko.

And holy fuck, another arc with the big bitch crying for food is the stuff that would make a person drop the manga for good.
I'm on the side of Big Mom being defeated during the Wano arc, however I don't mind seeing Big Mom in another arc again. Seeing some people getting very salty at the idea of Big Mom appearing in another arc again is going to be very amusing to me, either way I don't really care if Big Mom appears in another arc or not.

I liked BM and her overall characterization in WCI with the "madness wonderland" theme and how she really played the absurdly irrational tyrant role which was very fitting for her.
As for her Wano portrayal? 0 good points in my opinion, everything about her not related to power was just awful.

Her portrayal has been better lately. Ever since she’s left the roof I think.
It really hasn't. She's failed to inflict any damage onto Kidd with a free shot, her Ikoku was at least partially tanked and she had to give up 1 year of her lifespan to fight off Law/Kidd who received zero treatment from the Rooftop fight.

Yep I really enjoyed Big Mom's character during the WCI arc and even though her food rampage during the second half of the WCI arc was annoying, I still prefer that over her character getting amnesia, hit in the face by a motorcycle driven by Franky, and being rolled away by Robin.

That’s not really negative portrayal for her imo. Just more of positive portrayal for Kidd and Law I think. Just like Luffy being impressive against Kaido isn’t necessarily negative portrayal for Kaido.

A free shot, named move using 2 homies that does zero damage isn't negative portrayal? It makes her AP look like dogshit.

It's a shame and it's definitely on partly Oda and partly the character itself cause it wasn't always for PIS she ended up embarassing herself. 🤔

Ah yes, because Carrot sitting at #8 in popularity is a prime example of the voting being based off of how well written a character is.
No Carrot obviously just cute and barely has screentime. BM has plenty of screentime and she at the bottom. Katakuri, Doffy are all doing decent. BM is hyped up has top 4 Pirate in the world. Her being a bumbling idiot 90% of her screentime is why.

Are you seriously trying to argue that Oda's writing of Big Mom in Wano hasn't been bottom-of-the-barrel McGuffin/plot device tier shite
The scenarios have to remain consistent with her character traits. You can't introduce a character one way. Dedicate a whole arc to them being that way. And in the very next arc they've suddenly done a 180, and everything that came before that is rendered moot.

The most questionable thing he's done with her character was introduce the amnesia plot line. Now if that plot line leads to nowhere, then yeah, it would be pretty bad. But if there is an payoff in the end, then it can be rectified. But everything else that has happened to her, remains inline with her character, which is how you're supposed to write characters. Not just take them in any direction you feel like on a whim.

So you think Any other yonko being rolled like a ball is alright? Like Whitebeard getting rolled out of Marineford

Big Mom isn't Whitebeard, nor is that something that would be inline with his character.

Big Mom has a personality disorder, and is simpleminded, with child like tendencies and characteristics. She's impervious to all manner of attacks, and in return, doesn't take many situations very seriously. And why would she, when it's damn near impossible to damage her?

Do we fault Luffy who is pretty much the same exact way, and has been since the series inception? No, because even though those kind of scenarios are common place for him, we've watched him grow into a powerhouse, and thus accept those situations that he still constantly gets into.

The reason people lose their shit for Big Mom is because they do dumbshit like compare her to "Whitebeard" all because "Buu... but YONKO!!!!!!" And this is how YONKOOOOOO's are supposed to be, because that's how YONKOOOOO Whitebeard is.

Well guess what, Luffy is going to be Pirate King, and has had way more ridiculous shit happen to him (and still will) than Big Mom ever will.
