General & Others First name actually first???

#1
People like Monkey D. Luffy have their names structured: Last, middle, then first.

But what about mofos like Benn Beckman??? Benn is clearly a first name.

You can’t make me believe for a second that Rob Lucci’s name isn’t Rob with the surname being Lucci like how it would be IRL.

Their names don’t follow the same layout as other people, can’t be, unless their parents are dumb.

Evidence for this is that both aren’t ordinary people, they are unique and one of a kind so they have special names that don’t follow backwards tradition.

Even names like Useless Kid.

You mean to tell me he was named Kid????

AND WHAT THE HELL IS A NEWGATE, Edward???

Whitebeards first name is Newgate. Blackbeard’s is teach.

Some people in one piece just have westernized names because they’re based on historical figures or because they’re more western style people but that doesn’t change the Japanese naming
Newgate??? Seriously???

I refuse to believe. My headcanon is that One Piece is just so diverse and each sea and every island has their own culture and tradition in regards to names that some people like the ones I mentioned have westernized names.

Ain’t no way in the 4th level of Impel Down did this man’s momma name him Newgate

Weevil is Edward Weevil not Newgate Weevil.

Some characters like Ceasar Clown and Benn Beckmann have names in the western way more for aestethic

Whitebeards first name is Newgate. Blackbeard’s is teach.
No man, Edward is the first name and Newgate the surname.
Surnames nig-always come first:

- Gol D. Roger (Gol D. Ace, later changed...)
- Monkey D. Luffy (Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon...)
- Charlotte Linlin (self explanatory...)
- Diez Drake (Diez Barrels...)
- Vinsmoke Sanji (Vinsmoke Judge, Vinsmoke Reiju, Vinsmoke Ichigi...)
- Nico Robin (Nico Olvia...)
- Don Quijote Doflamingo (Don Quijote Rocinante, Don Quijote Homing...)
- Boa Hancock (Boa Sandersonia, Boa Marigold...)
- Capone Bege (Capone Pez...)
- Kozuki Oden (Kozuki Momonosuke...)

We also have some anomalties like Edward Newgate, Ben Beckmann, Rob Lucci, Das Bornes etc... where the name comes first.
But I'm sure that Eustass, Roronoa, Trafalgar, Scratchmen, Basil, Marshall, Drakul, Bartholomew, Silvers, Scopper and so on are surnames.

Now that I think about it, I have some doubts on Cutty Flam

You get that Whitebeards name is Edward Newgate right?

Edward - surname
Newgate - Given name

Rob Lucci is only ever called Lucci by those close to him or rob lucci from those who aren’t.

Luccis his given name
Ben is the first of Ben Beckman for the same reason, as far as I recall Shanks calls him Ben
As for Lucci, I'm italian and that's an italian surname, but maybe is just me

Given that Weevil is Edward Weevil and not Weevil Newgate, nope.

Every character follows Japanese naming conventions.
Forgot about Weevil, ya got me there.

The only ones I can think of that definitely don’t follow Japanese naming patterns are Kelly and Bobby Funk.

Everyone else seems to be western. Sanji is heavily based on a European prince, but he’s not Sanji Vinsmoke, he’s Vinsmoke Sanji. Same for all the royals in the series tbh, apart from Wano they’re all western themed, but they follow Japanese patterns.

Edward being Whitebeard’s family name and not given name basically says to me that everyone will be doing it the japanese way, no matter if it makes sense to us or not. It’s not like Oda has a great grasp of English.

What I know is that Cutty was used for naming ships, so pretty fitting for a shipwright, and Flam probably a norwegian reference to the railway and Franky built a railway. So this strikes like something fitting his characteristics, maybe his parents were also shipwrights or it's just Oda's doing.

Franky is the nickname he gave himself instead.

Didn't know this, cool

His parents were pirates who abandoned him in Water 7

Franky is the nickname he gave himself instead.
Iceberg gave him that
