Samurai become very attached to their swords, often bestowing them with names as a sign of respect. Swords came to be known as the soul of the warrior and were treated with the same respect.

see, one can be spiritual and not religious..

in buddhism there is no god. they dont pray to god in buddhism. they try to attain nirvana. this is a standard buddhist procedure to honor the dead ~ so zoro is honoring his dead sword.
