This is just my thought that I wanted to share since a long time ago.
There are surely a lot of interesting stuff in one piece we can't deny that. From the world building, the unique fighting style, differences traits of every single character, the gags, etc..
But as far as I see in every forum, there are so few people giving more focus in what makes one piece so special (at least for me) which is the idea of freedom given by the author.
Our history has told us tales of amazing people in the past and their struggle to create a better world, like for example : Spartacus slave revolt against the mighty Roman empire, the French revolution, Haitian revolution, Declaration of Human rights, October revolution, abolishment of slavery, world war, Decolonization, abolishment of apartheid, and so many other. All of these stories tell us about how far people can do to the extend of sacrificing their own life and even their family life in order to achieve a mutual goal : Freedom.
If we take a deeper look in the manga, I think Oda is greatly Inspired by those tales.
The presences of the Celestial Dragon and the Revolution Army itself is already enough to prove it. Not to mention other events such as Fisher Tiger freeing the slaves, Luffy punching Carlos's face, Shooting the WG's flag, and litterally in almost every arc we got fodders rise up and fight against a much stronger force despite knowing that they'll probably die without even doing any significant damage to their opponent. I'd say, it's actually very rare in any other manga where the inhabitants of an arc or a country is actually involved in the fight as an army to overthrow the villain's force.
I guess the story of one piece is a journey of men in their quest to find the noble meaning of freedom. Not the narrow one, but the better and the deeper meaning : the freedom to protest against tyrannical authority, the freedom to sincerely help the people we care or even the people we don't know, and the freedom to create a better world for everyone to live.
I think by creating this Manga, Oda is trying to sum those amazing tales from our history, making a conclusion, and then tells the readers about his own idea of freedom in 'One Piece' (if you see the wordplay here).
