This is what i think what you see on aokiji is the same as fujitora. But the main difference is that aokiji had the power to change things but he didnt use it this made him regrets so many things in life. Perhaps some of this reason is his connection with cipher pols the deaths, oahara and many more.
aokiji resigned for the main reason like that. He thinks that after akainu become the fleet admiral things would get worst because of akainu’s bilief of absolute justice.
so lets go with fujitora, this is what i think with my guy fujitora. He had the same experience just like aokiji, he saw the worst things that probably cipher pol did but with the power he possessed he cant do anything about it. So he decided that its over, his done. He decided to destroy his eyes in exchange to this promise to himself.
