Kaido vs Yamato is another example.

Don't see what stops shanks from fighting garling at all. More so now that we know it was shamrock not shanks meeting with gorosei.

Yamato and Kaido is not the best example as they had history. Same with Sanji and Judge, they have a history of bad blood. Shanks and Garling have no history so there is no build up. Unless just seeing 2 top-tier characters go at it is what you are looking for but story wise there is nothing there right now.

I'm not saying it can't happen but I am not seeing the setup for it. I surely do not see it happening this arc, as I do not expect Shanks to show back up to Elbaph (like most others seem to) considering he just left to start chasing the One Piece.

It's pretty simple really. Garling exist for shanks most likely. He fits as a perfect opponent for shanks during endgame fight against WG. Now it's not confirmed but likely.
