Like at any given moment since he ate it, Luffy could have died, and then just "Boom" instance perfect synchronization with his Devil Fruit, and awakening, lmao...
Awakening is the highest level of Devil Fruit Mastery. It happened cause Luffy worked for it.

Of course Luffy deserved an awakening by this point in the story, he pretty much maxed out his gears and non-awakened DF abilities, however what we got wasn’t just that it was a complete retcon of his entire fruit into perhaps the most OP fruit and most valuable fruit of all time of which the limits are still unknown. All of this occurs after he apparently dies on panel. I ask for the last time, how is that a story telling master class?
