Is Gear 5th legit or overhyped?

It is allegedly the most ridiculous power in the world."​



So for those who don't know, Toon Force is an ability that is widely feared and almost nigh unbeatable in fictional vs situations. Basically it is an ability quite similar to reality warping only that is typically for comedic effect.

Here are some classic examples:




Looks similar to:



^Making solid objects impossibly pliable. Yes, it is part of the awakening but impressive nonetheless.


^ one of my fav Toon Force examples.


The Mask is a powerful comic book character with legendary toon force ability. The similarity is uncanny.


Comic book feat:



Gear 5th is still at its early stages but if it really does evolve into something even more powerful and ominous then we might be entering an age of controlled lunacy.
Luffy's power might potentially be "ridiculously endless". And for the first time in a LONG TIME we might see a power balance once again shifting favorably towards One Piece's side against other powerhouses like Naruto and Bleach.

Whether this is a good or a bad thing is really up to the reader's interpretation.

What's your opinion?

We thought Luffy was Goku and all this time he was actually Arale.

It’ll be strong, that much is for sure. Genuine top tier strong. But one of the few things I’m cautiously optimistic about is that this is not endgame, it’s just the start of it.

So there will be others, even if it’s only two or three, who can put a fight up against it.

It's a limited variation of toon force imo, Luffy can't just do as he sees fit and ignore the rules of the story, there will be clear limits on it.

Regardless, he's top five for sure right now and arguably top three alongside Kaido and Blackbeard if he's reached his peak strength.

He also make the ground having new physical property since its now able to reflect Boro Breath like a pingpong ball

Oda is a fan of some goofy cartoony films, thats why he admires some of works of tim borton, infact you can see those goofness in most of his design, tbh don't even get why people are complaining about this, it's not like he did it to others, Luffy was the embodiment of freedom, free spirit, childlike innocence, simplicity . for me this was like breath of a fresh air, cause most anime follow certain rules semi realism, and that's what seperates anime to cartoons. Cartoons are only made for Joy. i think oda wanted to make people feel those things to luffy.

Luffys Gear 5 = The Mask

And whoever watched the mask will understand Luffy has no equal anymore he can take out anybody in a funny way that's how strong he become he can do basically whatever he wants

I think people don't yet realize what Gear 5 means
The way he is fighting now doesn't necessarily define Gear 5, it's just part of it
Gear 5 = Sun God Form = Luffy can Fight however he Imagines

This means that just like Gear 4, Luffy can access Multiple Gear 5 Forms, but this time they are Unlimited (His Imagination)
So even though the one currently against Kaidou is Toony & Goofy due to the overwhelming joy that Luffy is feeling right now

But later along the Story, we might see more Serious Versions of Gear 5
What would Luffy imagine when he is Angry? or Enraged? or Calm? or in a Hurry? ... etc

It's also interesting how Luffy was going deeper with every Gear
Gear 2 ---> Blood
Gear 3 ---> Bones
Gear 4 ---> Haki
Gear 5 ---> Inner Mind (As if he is stretching his own Imagination)

His ability is tied to him, so the whole "he can do whatever he wants" is tied to him and his body only. But seeing as it's an awakening power, it has a limited effect on whatever/whoever he touches.

Other than that it's just Gear 4 + effect surrounding ability + durability & strength increase. 100% there'll be stronger opponents that'll deal with this

It is going to be as OP as Oda wants it to be.

It can have no limitations but,

at the moment,

Luffy only used rubber-like abilities since he only knows that he is made of rubber.

The mask's eyes popping out is itself referencing prior classic animation, I doubt Oda is referencing the mask directly, when he is referencing popeye etc directly so much.

3:37 for some classic eye popping.
