I use intellect the same way the classical philosophers and scholastics use it, that is, as shorthand for a capacity for abstraction

When have animals demonstrated this?
We can't lift weights like Gorillas, i guess we don't have strength...

@Germinator Google AI told me this:
Some evidence suggests that animals can think abstractly, while others argue that they are not capable of abstract thought:

  • Evidence of abstract thought
Some animals can group things based on shared traits, classify animals, and recognize pictures of other dogs. For example, dogs can learn to "think back" on cue and repeat actions they haven't been trained to perform. Elephants may also be able to think abstractly, as they use non-imitative sounds to label others.

  • Evidence that animals are not capable of abstract thought
Some argue that animals are only capable of thinking about particular things, and that abstract thought is a power of the mind that only humans possess. Others argue that animals may carry out complex behaviors without anticipating the outcomes. For example, cats may experience stress, fear, or anxiety, but they likely won't dwell on those events.
So, this isn't a clear cut discussion. The proper answer is: We don't know.

I agree it's possible. I don't think they've demonstrated it

Whatever they have, it is certainly rudimentary compared to us.
If we want to be scientific, we should analyze that animals have been in rather the same stage of progress for the past millions of years compared to humans. Even if both humans and animals have an intellect, they are incomparable in degree

The study used tests entirely reliant upon perception and memory. None of that requires abstraction

Where's the contradiction in a criminal regretting their actions, and interiorly willing themselves to do better from now on, all in one night?
None if the change does not need to be radical.

I think you are a confused on something. Being a criminal does mean that you are in marge of society. Being a criminal means that you are literally following the guidelines of the system of oppression to the T. Being in the marge is doing everything to remove the influence of our systems of oppression on us.

So a criminal will not necessarily have to change much to fit in the mold of our oppressive societies.

You already admitted people can change their opinions on the basis of emotion, or appealing to an authority.
Based on emotions yes, in the case of trauma. For authority, no.

You keep bringing up the bare minimum reading needed to become a radical leftist but I didn't know criminals were criminals based on a great depth of understanding after lots of studying lmao
No. Most of people in prison are there because they are the prime victim of our system of oppression and use crime as a way to get out of it. For others (like murderers) it's situationnal. For things involved with patriarchy on the other hand, the crimes stand on a lack of understanding of their place in society.

So a big understanding and empathy wave would be needed to at least try to prevent those behavior.

I literally shared with him multiple studies and consensus and he said "I don't accept it".

Nothing you will tell him will convince him.

God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

This has been a long debate.

Your original point was that it would be impossible for the death penalty to change a criminal, right?

It sounds what you are saying is that it is possible, for criminals who don't need radical change, and that it is a case-by-case basis

I accepted those studies lol, yes we can create an isolated environment showing animals solving puzzles or categorizing lol. These tests don't require abstraction

This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time. It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything. I found freedom. Losing all hope was freedom. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.
You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

Being angry is ok, as long as you canalize this anger correctly.

If after what you just told me, you follow by "leftism is the problem", then you are showing me that you do not canalize correctly your anger as you would literally fight those who are trying to change all of that.

BUT

If you tell me now that, yes, you do understand that in reality we are being played by a system called capitalism and their horsement of apocalypse that are Billionnaires.. then yes. This would be the right direction for your anger. Because this channeling would rely on real and documented evidence of oppression.

Your original point was that it would be impossible for the death penalty to change a criminal, right?
No my point is that it was the wrong and unethical tools.

Also, no, a criminal will not be changed by death penalty, they will be changed by many things. Again. You are confusing one tool with the influence of all the material conditions of existence of a criminal.

Change is possible, but not because of death penalty or punition, but because of an understanding that comes from outside of this system.
