https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverted_totalitarianism sheldon wolin and chris hedges wrote about this a bit but i think hedges is still a self avowed communist.
when the suggestion is made that the furthest-right as represented by Nazis and Capitalists and the furthest-left as represented by Socialists and Communists have any similarities, it's often laughed off or considered a childish or ridiculous suggestion. "Horseshoe Theory", they call it, making fun of how they're "bending" the political line so that the furthest ends get closer together.
but the idea of the line is just made up in the first place. at its simplest, politics is about the organization of decision-making power, and in both of those extremes, the organization structure is almost entirely the same. there is an underclass with no power, fooled into thinking they have power, by whom all wealth is produced and from whom all wealth is extracted. there is a police class. there is a managerial class. to simplify it as much as possible, say the earth only had one government in charge of the entire world. Whether this theoretical government were entirely capitalist or entirely communist, the experience of a citizen living in the world would be almost identical.
