Carnivorous animals for example are fed with live prey if they are to be reintroduced to the wild.
Fending for themselves im not sure,cant really prepare them for that kinda shit. Animals in the wild also arent prepared the first couple situations. And animals that are reintroduced are usually adult already.
Some animals dont really have predators to worry about, like the european bison, which also has a stable population again thanks to reintroducing them to the wild. Pandas were also reintroduced to help the small wild population iirc.
Most important aspect is the ability to acquire food items and not be fixated on humans though.

As for social security and other stuff,the catholic church and other religious institutions were the first to come up with a system to help poor people that were homeless and didn't have a family.
