True, it's a simple backstory with Rocks being charismatic and a badass. But the premise of his downfall was the capture of his family. Well, it would have been better if we were shown an attachment to his family, or heck, his wife.
But no, Oda didn't care about that. Like, why should we even care about Eris? We don't know her as a character besides being a fellow pirate who gave birth to Teach. Also Oda slipping in the Davy family name like great now we have more questions than answers.
One Piece is almost ending and Oda still wants to keep on teasing us. It wouldn't kill him to just say Joyboy real name is Davy D Jones.
