Powers & Abilities Guns are a significant part of Roger and Shanks’s fighting style

In chapter zero, Roger was shown holding a pistol in the Edd war battle against Shiki.

In the pirate warrior games, I do believe both Roger and Shanks have gun attacks.

But most significantly, I think their guns hold special relevance as far as their connection to Luffy goes.

Luffy is the successor of both Roger and Shanks. He told Shanks in chapter 1 that he wishes for his punches to be as strong as pistols. Most of Luffy’s named attacks have a gun theme.

I think one could also draw a parallel between Luffy’s rivals and Shanks/Roger. Law is a D like Roger, Kid is a conquer like Roger. Kid also has red hair, one arm, and an eye scar like Shanks.

Law is a swordsman while Kid, among other things, uses makeshift guns. One of his strongest moves is a railgun.

This isn’t to negate their status as swordsmen. Roger and Shanks are confirmed swordsmen. But swordsmanship clearly isn’t their only skill.

It’s not difficult to see why Roger and Shanks would use guns. Their signature move divine departure seems to only be a close range technique. Rather than sending a long distance slash to defeat Kid, Shanks blitzed him from the shore to land divine departure at close range.

It’s very likely that being less skilled swordsmen, Shanks and Roger aren’t capable of Mihawk tier flying slashes that can range entire islands. Hence they rely on guns for ranged attacks.

This also explains the difference between Roger and Shanks despite the two having basically the same abilities. Roger could wield a sword and gun at the same time. Shanks can only do either/or.

Unless Shanks replaced his missing arm with a cannon idk how bro is supposed to use a gun when he already holds his sword in his sole hand. Unless you expect shanks to juggle mid fight which let’s be honest… he ain’t doin.
He sheathes the sword when he’s not actively using it

Most strong characters have multiple forms/fighting styles.

Luffy has gears
Zoro has his different sword styles

Even Mihawk has his dagger in addition to Yoru, which he could still use for close combat and high speed attacks even against top tiers.

No reason to think Shanks is any different.

Both shanks and roger are swordsman bro. Let it go :seriously:
Being a swordsman and having other abilities/skills isn’t mutually exclusive

Law is a swordsman. He also has various DF techniques that have nothing to do with swordsmanship.

If Shanks was truly just like Mihawk, you’d think Luffy would want to be a swordsman or at the very least learn slashing attacks. But instead he told Shanks he can punch like a pistol. Why?

because Shanks is likely equally proficient in guns. Doesn’t mean he’s not a swordsman, he is. But as someone who desires One Piece, he has no reason to limit himself to one style.

Gears are not a different fighting style, it's amping his fighting style. Zoro has different sword styles due to using multiple swords, but it's still a swordstyle, he isn't pulling out guns. Mihawk's dagger is just for cutting apples and trolling his opponent when he isn't wearing it as an accessoire. Now especially since Shanks only has one arm, switching between sword and gun would be too cumbersome. Being a high level swordsman with (probably) a supreme grade blade, there is no need for a gun. Roger's gun was probably retconned. It was just a raondom panel of Roger at a time he had no feats at all. Now he isn't shown wearing guns at all. Unlike e.g. Teach.

No doubt they are skilled with firearms, but they don't have any noticable seat at their table.

Oda likes giving random characters weapons that they don't really use much nor need, like here

Or Queen with his swords

Certainly Blackbeards pistol or Queen"s sword cannot be said to be a "significant" part of their arsenal.

Rat stuck with gryphon even after losing his dominant arm he went as far as training to wield it with his other arm. That takes some real dedication we should give the snitch some props how obsessed he is with swordsmanship. Sadly for his fanboys there is even stronger monster roaming the seas. Making up some imaginary fighting style to save him from being under Mihawk shadow is fruitless attempt :jordanmf:

I don’t think it will be if not solely for the fact that Luffy’s attacks are all gun themed

Roger and Shanks’s successor is Luffy. It just wouldn’t make sense for them to be exactly the same type of swordsman as Mihawk.

I would argue that Shanks is one of the few characters who could actually use a pistol effectively in a top tier fight due to being a haki master.

We’ve seen how haki can be used with guns with Izo. Beckman and Yasopp are also haki/gun specialists.

I doubt it would be like Doffy or Teach, who have DF powers that make guns obsolete.
