Prime Hiruzen is said to be the strongest shinobi IIRC so I think Hiruzen takes this one. He also mastered all of Konoha jutsu so I think he can counter most of what Pain dishes to him.
R1: Hiruzen can counter Konan paper jutsu with his fire jutsu.
R2: I think Enma is stronger than any of animal summon animal path has so Hiruzen takes this too.

We are talking about someone who had the sage of six path eyes also Pain was crippled so we barely saw his prime but still I would say he defeats Hiruzen regardless
The reason why jariya and naruto were able to beat Pain is because of sage mode and Hiruzen didn’t master sage mode or have it from what we saw in the manga

Hiruzen can transform Enma into a staff that is as hard as diamond. His taijutsu was also top notch to be able to fight both Edo Hashirama and Edo Tobirama. I think Hiruzen can defeat animal pain quickly before she can summon more of her animals.
Hiruzen was hailed as God of Shinobi thus labelling him as the strongest shinobi of his time. In his prime, I think he doesn't have chakra issue. His stamina and chakra reverse might be much better too. Hiruzen was also called professor since he was very intelligent so I think he might notice Pain's weakness and aim for that.

SM isn't necessary when you are as powerful as Tobirama or Hiruzen in base IMO.
I know but the first thing Animal Path does is summoning Cerberus and the more Hiruzen attacks it with Enma adamantine sword the more multi headed dog grows bigger, he have to put it down with one shot or aim for the path directly if he can sense the Cameleon.
Intelligence wise he might pull it but i doubt that he has enough fire power

Honestly no there is a reason why tobirama used the transportation jutsu on naruto to inflict damage on obito when it was decided that only sage mode works on him the same with pain and there’s a reason why EMS was jelly of naruto in the war because naruto had sage mode and why madras even tho had to the sharigan sought out ways to get the reinnegan it was also said that minatos sage mode was incomplete [/QUOTE]

Pein wins very high difficulty. Hiruzen seems to specialize predominately in ninjutsu and taijutsu. His ninjutsu will be useless against Preta Path or Deva Path, whereas Animal Path, Asura Path and Deva Path makes taijutsu difficult.
Considering that 59 Hiruzen was said to be > Prime Orochimaru, it's safe to say that Prime Hiruzen would be a very good match for Pein, but he doesn't have any way to get the drop on him before Chibaku Tensei or Chou Shinra Tensei ends him.
