It really isn't, it's either good or bad. Some people want to make it a political fight. That's on them.
If you want to buy the game and try it, just do it, and judge by yourself if it's a good game or not because that's all that matters for a video game

I've heard game's pretty average, is it worth the whole playthrough for a guy who barely likes HP?

My verdict for this game: solid.
There are not many activities in the game outside of the main story and the side quests, I mean sure you can colect around 600 collectibles, reveal some things with revelio, you can get some animals for your room etc... but when you finish the main quest line the game becomes almost dead.
They should have at least developed the duel room at Hogwarts more, they started good with the duel questline, but the questline ends as fast as it started...

However, this game deserves appreciation, it looks good, it feels good to play, I like the verse setting, a mmorpg with this game setting would be some top tier stuff, but the global hardware/average gamer cant handle this, maybe in 2030-2040.
