They came for a different mission and when Saturn emerged and everyone noticed his presence, they added this mission to their docket.

More than clearly that they didn't knew. Not even some marines knew.

They were after something else inside Egghead. Probably the Seraphims that were traped? Idk how Teach will make to "tame" them though.

Or since Teach is all about DFs maybe some other DF copies that had around there? Or the formula to make new ones based on the blood of the owners (in case of Paramecia of course) and probably the one with regular Zoans. So Teach will have an improved Best Pirates army.

I and many others theorize they where after the formula to making devil fruits since hunting powerful devil fruits had been their stick since their introduction
They would no longer need to hunt down fruits if they get the formula to just make hundreds of them
