General & Others How do you attach yourself to side characters so quickly?

Just like Roger said to Pedro

"Everybody has their moment to shine"

The diversity, quality and time Oda invests in many "side" characters makes One Piece an amazing manga for me!

I really enjoy them

The world is at the same time small and huge. You can indetify yourself with the main character but at the same time appreciate and learn with every little side story that helps building the grand story

I don't allow any character to easily win my affection, whether it's a main or side character.
The characters i attach myself to are the ones the author puts the most efforts into making interesting and entertaining.
This stupid trend of manga authors using sob backstories to make audiences care about characters is very outdated and must end. Life being cruel to people is a extremely common thing. This is not a reason to believe a character is deep, and no one should think they are special because of it.
Lolda suck ass at writing side characters. The side characters he creates are worthless and annoying, and they do nothing but fuck around. The readers root for these characters to be killed off painfully, but it's pointless because Lolda never does it. The biggest example of this are the Scrubbards. Lolda gave them a very long flashback, but even after that they are still shallow and forgettable characters. They did nothing but fuck around during their screentime, and Lolda did numerous fake-out deaths with them when we wanted them to die.

@TheLastBerserker @lee33 @Water1415 @Gauntlet
Basically, if a side character isn't annoying and sympathetic, they have a good chance of winning me over. The Wanonese outside of Toko and her dad ain't it, tho.

I go in with the belief that they matter and open to seeing what the writer wants to do with them

Hence why I was never bothered by the gladiators even when reading week to week from the beginning of Dressrosa while other people immediately labeled them irrelevant

Edit: it doesn't mean that I'll like them but it does mean that I'm open to it
This is a big world the obviously main figures shouldn't be the only ones with an impact

One of best examples of "small guys mattering" is the mountain bandit who took Luffy away which led to shanks saving him and becoming his hero

Vivi. Became a pirate slash bounty hunter as an undercover agent to get information on the man that was ruining her country. That sentence alone is enough that you should like and root for that person.q

Waipa, warrior fighting against the crackers who stole his home land.fight with a giant fire laser bazooka and skates that glide on clouds.

Franky family was just funky as hell and ride hard for their big bro. Shirahosi giant fishman princess that want to see the world. Rebecca. Orphaned as a child and forced to fight for her life on a weekly or daily basis learns haki at super young age.

Even gunny, super loveable from the start and I'll always hate Pda for making her a character just to have her raped and killed and be a flashback character for a current character.

It's the characters we see constantly that I think suck. Like akainu and koby and shiryuu and doflamingo. Till this day I'll never understand what kids saw in postskip doflamingo to make him so popular. He's a poor man's crocodile.
