We know he was in the Marines during God's Valley at the age of 17. But how long was he actually in the Marines? By the time of the "Ohara Incident" twenty years ago, he had left the Marines and formed the Freedom Fighters, the precursor to the Revolutionary Army.
So how long was he actually in the Marines for? And what rank do you think he reached?

I would say he was probably just a Seaman, some level of Petty Officer, maximum.

So, very low-ranked.

No idea, he was 17 but the timeline lets him be with the marines until he’s like 30.

We don't have a date for him joining or leaving

We have like a "range" (we know he was out by the time he met Vegapunk) but nothing past that

I'd imagine he joined from fairly young (Koby was able to join at 16 but iirc it's never been stated how old you have to be to enlist)

As for when he left it's impossible to really say

If I had to take a wild guess he genuinely tried to change the organization from the inside for a few years before defecting when he realized there was nothing he could do without directly opposing the government

Ohara- 22 years ago

So sometime within that 16 years he left the marines

We know he was already away from it before ohara since he was leading the freedom fighters at that time

According to the wiki the freedom fighters was active 25 years ago

Which brings us to a 13 year Gap between God Valley and the time of the freedom fighters

Now here's where things get theorized and head canon

I truly believe Robin is dragons first born daughter

She was 8 on Ohara meaning during the freedom fighters era she would of been 5 and we know Olivia left Robin when she was 2

So let's say im right and Dragon is indeed Robins father

Robin who is currently 30 would of been born 8 years after the events of God Valley

Just to keep things easy lets say dragon joined the year of god valley he was 17 he was questioning everything around him

So sometime between Robins birth and God Valley Dragon left the marines

But I think we can get a little bit more accurate reading

We know Akainu and Dragon seem to have a history but Akainu wouldn't join the marines for another 6 years after Dragon despite being the same age Dragon joined at 17 while Akainu joined at 23

I believe there is deep history between Akainu and Dragon but clash of ideologies and sense of justice drove Dragon to leave

So final verdict Dragon was a marine for 6 to 7 years before finally leaving

Why wouldn't Dragon say something to Robin during the 2 years she was with them then?
Also I think Dragon left immediately after God Valley.

Who says that he didn't? We don't know what they did for 2 years,

No idea, he was 17 but the timeline lets him be with the marines until he’s like 30.

10 yrs is a lot of time for him to grow really strong. Especially with the traumatic experience at God Valley giving him even greater ambition. He probably stayed at the marines and did everything he could to rank up gain power/strength and knowledge/secrets. I wouldn't be surprised if he left as a VA.

Dragon left some time before Kuzan became Garp's student.Garp complains about Dragon becoming a rev, so he should have left the Marines before then.

If Dragon is to have been comrades with Akainu as theorised, he would need ti stay in the Marines at least a few more years, as Akainu didn’t join until he was 23 and they are the same age.

Or Akainu joining at 23 could be retconned, it looks like that only came from a Vivre Card so it wouldn’t be a big deal to change it to them being like 13 year old cadets together.
