General & Others How Many Times Have You Successfully Changed Someone's Mind During an Online Debate?

I've come to realize that arguing/debating with people on the internet for me has gone as well as athletes arguing with the Refs: no one gives a fucking shit.

So, as I work towards NOT arguing with people on the internet, I wanted to ask the people here:

How often do you actually change someone's mind during online debates?

Because if we're never really changing each other's minds, even when we do prove others wrong... aren't we just ranting at each other like mindless morons?

I think that's the single biggest issue with modern discourse:

When people realize they're wrong, they just try to lie their way out of it.

The amount of people with the honesty/decency to admit they're wrong, and actually change when they are, is... slimmer than Flat Stanley. I've voted for both political parties in the US, and can now admit they're both disgusting frauds. But, IMO, the biggest changes to my mental views came from me CHALLENGING MYSELF. I'm still ass at listening to others who have beliefs that rival mine.

Conversely, how many times have you had your mind successfully changed by someone online?

A few times.

I dont keep count, but occasionally it happens.

But this is a legit problem, especially if its about very strong opinions to begin with.

There is a silver lining in convincing other people not directly involved in the debate though
This is a good point. I don't think about that enough.

Members of my family. On the Internet probably 0.
I think my goal is not to change someones mind here. But to make enough noise so people start to ask why I do that in the first place.

Radicalization is a long process, I can't just accelerate it at will.

--

I will add the fact that it's a lot harder to make people agree on values, ethics and politics at their left rather than their right.
On our right, it's out biases and reactionnary tendencies that enter the question.

For example, I pay 3 times more attention to subjects regarding women and racialized people because I'm a white man in an imperialist country and I know that I will have a lot of racist and sexist biases without even paying attention. This also means that I have 3 time more chances to be convinces by someone at my very right, than my very left (not talking about opposite side in the spectrum)

Our left side require us to ponder questions, be analytic, empathic toward outgroups and reconsider our reactionnary biases. It's a lot harder for someone like me to convince people for that reason. (this is also why I make big text, because if I just said "trans people needs to be included in the organization of the forum", there are very little chances for that to happen.

Is such a kid mentality to think you have to change someone's mind specially to bend to your own believes.

Debating is a share of information and experience. You will probably learn a thing or two that you didn't and anyway will learn how to express better your ideas. No one needs change their opinions but will for sure be more mature after it.
