When Dorry and Broggy are comparing Shanks haki to Joyboy's, speculating if it's even stronger than Joyboys haki, they are pulling from their memory of an instance of Shanks showing haki that had to have been in the same ballpark.
The only instance then, that actually makes sense, would have to have been the Loki incident. (Unless some mad lad is going to have the audacity to say they were comparing it to Shanks divine departure)
Therefore, the last time they saw Shanks use his most powerful haki, was in elbaph. Where dorry and broggy witnessed it.
Therefore, they are comparing a mid 20's shanks haki, to joyboys.
If using more mass results in a stronger affect, then it makes sense then that they are comparing a time where shanks was forced also used a great amount of mass.
It may even be the case that, Oda decided to touch upon this kind of explanation, before we see shanks do a similar thing.
If this is indeed the case it's of course crazy but, I think this has to at-least happen if Oda wants to illicit some sense of shock from the readers.
Anyway because of that, although Oda's statement about shanks talent doesn't specify he emulated Divine Departure when he was on rogers crew. It would make sense it was the case, if what I said is true.
Because only that amount of talent could justify a mid 20's shanks being that strong.
There are some panels that support this:
Buggy specifically talking about shanks shining with potential when he was on rogers crew and this panel shows shanks with his sword out, and seemingly roger patting him on the head (presumably after showing him divine departure)
The second panel:
Is Buggy talking about how Shanks is supposed to be the King of the next Generation. Why would buggy, who was on the crew and saw monsters like roger wb ray etc, have so much faith in this kid shanks, unless he already showed crazy potential to actually be the "King of the next generation" which is obviously making a parallel to Roger.
This wouldn't just be him swinging his sword around with lots of skill or having an aptitude to learn, this should be Shanks literally being able to emulate an adv coc move as a kid without instruction.
It's not an impossibility, it also upscales both shanks and Mihawk, which is the reason for this post.
