With the advancements in a.i development and the ever growing influence of social media I often ask myself the question what's the best way to approach it.
As always with new hot technology, the effects on the youth are more pervasive and potentially devastating.
A.i. won't go away and social media has been a part of most young people's lives for decades.
Outright banning it won't work. They'll just find ways to access it anyway and sooner or later they absolutely will encounter them.
So what do we do? Act like tiktok and chat gpt don't exist or shittalk it whenever our (future) kids or other children in our lives mention them?
Or do we take part? Do we leave Tiktok to the firebrands, the political hate mongers and conspiracy nuts? Or wouldn't it be better for our kids to see some sensible content from time to time?
My initial reaction to both social media and a.i. is to stay away. Never had a social media account and only used some a.i. to play around with for a brief time some 1-2 years ago.
So my first answer my own question would be "it's better to condemn a.i. and social media and to heavily restrict their use for children(if I had any)".
Regardless, it is what it is: kids WILL use tiktok and they WILL tell a.i. to do their homework and I do understand their point of view. If I were a kid today I wouldn't solve a single math equation myself, I'd develop a.i. addiction and be glued to the screen. The kids of today never experienced a world without social media, my generation barely remembers a time without internet.
Wouldn't it be better for them if we took their hands and guided them through this addictive bullshit?
If we want to reach the young generation at all, the conversations will need to happen on the platforms they already use.
Would it be better to enter the fray, so to speak, and fight for the youth's attention, as parents, educators or just normal everyday people that have something to say? Adapt the way we present those messages to the usual social media tone?
Boring lectures won't reach any kids, especially nowadays where attention spans are shorter than they've perhaps ever been. Neither will bans and restrictions stop them. Children don't like lame adults.
This was an unusually long text lol
I'm done rambling. What are your views on this?
