Ace's death was a wake up call for Luffy: He noticed that he isn't all that strong and that he needed to become stronger in order to protect his frineds and crew. So he trained to get stronger.
And an additional factor is in my opinion Luffy's realization that his crew consists of the most important people in his life. And that he needs to defend them.
This is also the reason why it will be so important for Luffy to fight Kizaru on Egghead. Because it was him who said something along the line of: "Without strength you won't be able to save your friends." And I think on Egghead we will have some of his "friends" again be endangered by the admiral and Saturn.
