Character Discussion I think Kaido not being completely evil is a good thing

In the Wano arc they have shown that he does care about subbordinates he views as strong and those who impress him or admire him like the Tobbi Roppo, ( He let Ulti talk back to him for example, Who's Who and Sasaki openly vying for his prized Calamities spots) and the Calamities. We already knew that he had adopted Ulti and Parents after their parent died but we didnt know who it was, now we do. It was Hanafuda. Someone whom Kaido in his own way respected because it seems like they shared a common goal ( Just like he respected King for wanting to change the world). I think its really cool and cute that Kaido took in Hanafudas kids after the later died and raised them, and even lets them bad mouth him.

I believe he also did the same thing with Jack, Jack was 28 in the Wano arc so he was 7-8 when Kaido showed up in Wano. He probably also took him in when Jack was very young, he did the same thing with King and raised both. I really like that we got this kind of characterization from Kaido in that he cares about certain people and is shown to be a great surrogate dad.

If only he was the same with Yamato, but I heavily his overt harshness with her stems from the fact that he knows her potential and had high hopes for her and she was basically openly defying him her entire life. This of course doesnt excuse his behaviour with her at all, he was an abusive father. But I find the contrast with how he treated her and the other kids in his crew interesting.

He was kind of a warped version of WB in a sense, taking in a bunch of misfits with him with a grand idea of changing the world but then overtime grew jaded and turned to violence and tyrany like how he treated the Wano citizens.

I just wanted to share my thoughts here. I just really wish he expanded on his relationship with his crew some more in the manga instead of those tidbits we get in SBS.

Trying to gauge any sort of identifiable personality from a schizophrenic lunatic who exemplifies polar opposite personality traits is a useless exercise. One of the biggest issues with Kaido was that he was a goddamned lunatic who had no character at all.

One second he’s ranting about wanting to start the biggest war of all time, the next he’s shitting his pants about the prospect of fighting the scabbards.

One second he’s screaming at his subordinates for them to not let Big Mom enter Wano, the next second he tells them to take her cuffs off so they can fight.

Kaido was an absolute disaster as a character, any attempts to characterize him as anything other than a schizophrenic are wrong from the start.

If Oda wrote him as an evil version of WB who used to also be rivals/enemies with Roger, then yeah it would work really well. He didn´t really commit to that during the arc, though. Even his harshness towards Yamato doesn´t really make sense, and was put alongside his forced obsession with Oden.
I feel he was hars on Yamato because she was basically rejecting him and his wants for her. Notice how he was never mad at her for cosplaying as Kaido and even called her his son. He was just super mad when she told me she wont rule as Shogun and wont take over Wano.

You have brought in things that had nothing to do with the topic Lee, I just wanted to highlight his weird care for some of his crew and nothing you said goes against that.

Yamato ¨rejected¨ Kaido because Kaido randomly one day killed Oden and Yamato was interested in Oden. When she told her dad about that, he locked her up and tried to starve her to death. He never really tried to recruit Yamato properly, nor explain any of his goals. When Yamato asks why he´s oppressing Wano, he just says ¨oh well I´m only here because Wano is important, also I won´t tell you why¨.

Yeah thats on Oda though, he shafted Kaido a lot when it comes to the reasons he was in Wano and his flashback. Oh well I tried to make a positive thread about Kaido caring about orphaned kids from his friend Hanafuda but it seems like nobody cares lol.

Lol, I appreciate the thread, him taking care of Ulti because he knew their dad is an interesting concept. You doing alright these days btw?

That makes him even worse because it shown his calculating personality. He doesn't care about anyone like a normal person and only raised the kids so they become his assets.
Also Crydo is deader than Big Meme.

he was never really written as evil, but a deeply broken person who was very depressed and self hating which made him more willing to do bad things

oda ruined it for every character by making them praise oden all the time...no good villain does that...Orochi was such a villain but oda ruined him too
