In the Wano arc they have shown that he does care about subbordinates he views as strong and those who impress him or admire him like the Tobbi Roppo, ( He let Ulti talk back to him for example, Who's Who and Sasaki openly vying for his prized Calamities spots) and the Calamities. We already knew that he had adopted Ulti and Parents after their parent died but we didnt know who it was, now we do. It was Hanafuda. Someone whom Kaido in his own way respected because it seems like they shared a common goal ( Just like he respected King for wanting to change the world). I think its really cool and cute that Kaido took in Hanafudas kids after the later died and raised them, and even lets them bad mouth him.
I believe he also did the same thing with Jack, Jack was 28 in the Wano arc so he was 7-8 when Kaido showed up in Wano. He probably also took him in when Jack was very young, he did the same thing with King and raised both. I really like that we got this kind of characterization from Kaido in that he cares about certain people and is shown to be a great surrogate dad.
If only he was the same with Yamato, but I heavily his overt harshness with her stems from the fact that he knows her potential and had high hopes for her and she was basically openly defying him her entire life. This of course doesnt excuse his behaviour with her at all, he was an abusive father. But I find the contrast with how he treated her and the other kids in his crew interesting.
He was kind of a warped version of WB in a sense, taking in a bunch of misfits with him with a grand idea of changing the world but then overtime grew jaded and turned to violence and tyrany like how he treated the Wano citizens.
I just wanted to share my thoughts here. I just really wish he expanded on his relationship with his crew some more in the manga instead of those tidbits we get in SBS.
