I think a creative spin on the whole "Chosen One" trope would be if Luffy unintentionally stole Ace's destiny by eating the fruit. That way Luffy would have to deal with the fact that if he never ate the Gomu Gomu, then Ace would still be alive.
That would also make me think that Blackbeard would end up stealing Luffy's fruit somehow

Honestly, considering Ace's behaviour, even with the Nika Fruit he probably would've gotten bodied by Akainu in the war due to falling for cheap provocations, so i'm not sure it would've changed much regardless of that.

Nika is very powerful but Ace's haki was arguably too weak to properly compete I think, even that would not have been enough to make enough difference

no i think its wrong, "the mind of its own" quote has more something to do with it's difficulty to achive always getting away in the hands of the marines.

i don't think the gorosei really confirm that it has a mind, cause they are more referring to the elusiveness of the fruit, quote like it has a mind of its own.

also luffy didn't really choose to eat gomu gomu, he didnt even know it was a DF, he really didn't have a choice but accept it, he almost cry when he leaned he will never be able to swim.

Of course, he did not choose to eat the devil fruit knowing that it was a devil fruit.
But he's still the one who made the choice of inserting the fruit in his mouth.
And even the fact that he didn't know the effect the fruit would have in his body is also part of the results of his own choices, since he chose to eat it without trying to inform himself properly by asking Shanks about it before eating.

And don't get me wrong; I'm not saying it was mainly his own fault that he ate the devil fruit; Luffy was just a kid, after all. Who was mainly at fault in the situation was Shanks for placing so dangerous a thing next to Luffy in a way that it was so easy for Luffy to end up eating it. But nevertheless, Luffy is still the one who consciously made the decision of eating the fruit.

The fruit won't choose Ace and therefore Ace won't be able to awaken it. Luffy might get another devil fruit later and everything would be mostly the same for the most part.

No ace still would have somehow died and the df would end up in luffy's hand. The df at this point was meant for Luffy as it effectively chose Luffy. Plus ace was and would be much better with the Mera than nika

Even if Shanks intended to give the fruit to Ace, if the fruit didn't acknowledge Ace, he won't eat it one way or another.

Maybe the fruit knows that Ace isn't destined for the bigger thing/only Luffy has enough destiny.
