I'm already a Sanji fan. He's almost as strong as Zoro while not using weapons, half of his limbs, not having a teacher and having a job that's unrelated to fighting. To be honest, Sanji is already unbelievably strong. Zoro trains all the time and has no personality or depth. He should be tiers above Sanji.

Zoro has his own character. Yes oda does a bad job of disconnecting Zoros character from Zoros strength; but most Zoro fans didn’t jump to law when he was with the crew despite law being stronger. No reason to assume they’d jump to any character.

It depends. If it's only stronger, I wouldn't put and replace Sanji over Zoro.

But if it's also author's preferential treatment too, I'd switch. Who doesn't want to stan a character who is getting more cool scenes, not given creepy gag, isn't used as plot convenience, etc.

Think a bit more about the differences... BTW Zoro already said if Luffy will stand his way to get to his dream he would left. He also said he would left at EL if Luffy would take Usopps back without a proper sorry by him.

For me Luffy and Zoro are the reason I liked OP and picked it up a decade later. Early 2000s I watched OP East Blue on TV. Logue Town was the last arc that was shown. After that I couldn't watch OP for a very long while. During this time I watched many different animes, read a few mangas and thats when I started reading OP again and then watched the anime. I don't think I have ever binge watched the OP anime, still not seen in an order or even every episode.

If you are the fan of a character just for their placement in strength rankings than there is something wrong with you and people like this should only be fans of the MC #1 or super villains. Post TS Jinbe joining in FI would have shifted those power loving Zoro fans from Zoro to Jinbe cause the general impression at that time was that Jinbe is probably the strongest guy after Luffy. Never actually went into power scaling shit till I joined Reddit and then WorstGen around 2-3 years ago.

It is about the character of course. It is also a recurring form of character you find in every shounen, I mean the cold badass but with a hearth, in some may rival/best friend of the MC. Be it Vegeta, Zoro, Sasuke, Killua etc. The point is that this type of character also need to be very close in power to the MC otherwise it becomes a joke, just imagine Vegeta and Goku relationship but Vegeta has the power level of Crilin.

While Sanji is at best the 3rd strongest guy, but who falls in the importance general hierarchy by at least a position because the main woman/ love interest of the MC comes first: Sakura before.. Rock Lee most likely? Or that pale guy in the 2nd half of the story (Sai?). Nami comes before Sanji (no need to explain to a OP community), the trio which is at the base if OP is Luffy, Zoro and Nami. Dragonball is a bit weird since Gohan and Piccolo share a bit this 3rd spot while there is no real female character who steals the 3rd place (maybe Bulma but I am not too sure). You get the point. This is also a mix of a fighter-cool character and comedic relief to not overlap too much with the MC and the 2nd guy.

Killua is waaaaaay more nuanced than all of the rest combined imo. Shouldn't even be in the convo with them

He is more complex for sure, also Togashi handles very well him being a kid (so a little more childish desires, "I want to be friends forever with Gon", for him instead of some stupid "I must be strong to have my vendetta vs Kakarot, Itachi etc."). Be the same can be said for Gon too, you can not put him really in the same group as Goku, Luffy and Naruto (and that is why HxH rocks) still imo the original model is the same (but heavily polished and changed for HxH).
