General & Others In Retrospect How do you feel about Sabaody Arc?

True, however the supernovas do help the world building as a concept, it shows there were more upcoming pirates besides the SHs with their own achievements.

Oda's treatment of them post-TS didn't hurt Sabaody as an arc for me, because the arc in total was 24 chapters. We didn't waste as much time on the SNs in Sabaody compared to SMILE plotline, for example.
Yes, I don’t see why some people are faulting Sabaody for introducing the Supernova when it is Oda’s fault for wasting them.
It’s like me downgrading Ennies Lobby for introducing the disappointments that were Kaido & Big Mom.

Sabaody is the best arc of One Piece along with Alabasta, Water 7/EL & Marineford.
It’s great in basically every respect and is some of Oda’s best storytelling. It’s the one arc that I can say I loved even more the 2nd time around.
It made episode 400 that I had initially overlooked one of my favourites in the series.

“I’ve never laughed as much as I did that day. I’ve never cried as much, I’ve never drank as much.”

I think the idea itself was cool but what we ended up getting post-timeskip didn't really live up to the set up.

There was never really any point at which I could perceive any of the supernovas as genuine rivals to Luffy and the Straw Hats. Punk Hazard Law was the one who ended up with the best portrayal. Instantly became an ally sure but by the end of the arc you really felt like the SHs were dealing with someone who had a very deep understanding of the New World, its power balance, underworld dealings as well as the best way to move the pieces to their advantage. From Dressrosa onwards, he's pretty much been carried by the SH's and the lucky circumstances they enjoy wherever they go but what he got was still way better than any of the other supernovas.

Guess it was always weird to expect these guys to ever really be on the same standing as Luffy and the gang, who dedicated 2 years to preparing for the NW, but then why try to push them as rivals in the first place. The Luffy/Law/Kid parallels in Wano felt extremely forced and difficult to take seriously when you review their respective resume and ultimate contribution to victory.

Back to the topic though, Sabaody is great. Perfect length, good world building and one of the most unexpected conclusions to a OP arc.

Supernovas are a GREAT addition to the show, especially now that we are currently into bonney piece and might get urouge piece after all.

PG's Thoughts: One of the best arcs in One Piece when I first witnessed it and its still top 5 I think, maybe even top 3. Its the beginning of Oda's Post Timeskip formula of having a lot of characters in an arc except its executed rather well. But I'll be honest I don't think this arc has aged the best maybe it will once we reach the end but it feels like a lot of broken promises in retrospect.

I wasn't happy how it changed the pacing. Would have prefered continous power up and wins. The least I liked was how celestials were the untouchables. Very annoying really.

You must think all of One Piece is mid then
:beckmoji:
nah it's just overrated, i love the arc better than a lot of others. Skypiea is my favorite arc and Sky Island Saga as a whole is phenomenal.

does Saboady bring some good elements to the table yes. the introduction of SN, Ray, Kizaru, CD, Hachis redemption, these things are great trut me I know, deeper plot points of slavery, human trafficking and added lore.

the reason i say it is mid is cause when asked at least here why it's a good arc or someones favorite they give answers that are for all the wrong reasons of what actually makes saboady great, i have it in my top 5 arcs overall maybe even 3 if im being honest but here i dropped a i think its mid comment and no one in here contested me in this regard.

i do however think majority of one piece is mid overall.

Amazing arc, definitely top 5 IMO

However, in retrospect, this arc was the reason why post-timeskip turned into a mess. I am talking about supernovas. They got way more panel time and focus than they deserved. Just look at Kidd, Oda gave him such focus in Wano and he still remains unlikable. Law is a good character, but 5 years of post-timeskip were centered around him which was a terrible decision from Oda. Bege remains a forgettable character after getting highlighted at WCI. Drake, Hawkins, Apoo, Bonney are mediocre. Instead of wasting panels on supernovas, Oda could have developed the strawhats more.
".. Remains unlikable.."
As it should be
